Hirosaki Castle and Park Cherry Blossom and Western Architecture Course

Hirosaki, the heart of the Tsugaru region, is one of Tohoku's most charming castle towns. Hirosaki Castle keeps its original wooden keep, and the surrounding Hirosaki Park bursts into color each spring with roughly 2,600 cherry trees, making it one of the finest blossom spots in the whole country. Elegant Western style buildings and old brick warehouses stand nearby, giving the town a rare blend of Japanese and European charm. This one day course starts at Hirosaki Station and links the castle, the park, and the historic buildings at an easy pace.

Course Route

9:00 Start at Hirosaki Station Grab a bus ticket or a rental bicycle near the station. The park is about twenty minutes away.

9:30 Hirosaki Park and Hirosaki Castle Stroll through the wide park toward the keep. The view of Mount Iwaki over the stone walls is a scene unique to Hirosaki.

11:30 A break at Fujita Memorial Garden A spot where a Western mansion meets a Japanese garden. The cafe here serves apple pie and coffee worth stopping for.

13:00 Lunch with local flavors Settle into a town eatery for Tsugaru soba or regional home cooking.

14:30 Western architecture walk Visit gems like the former City Library and the former foreign teachers residence, all from the Meiji and Taisho eras.

16:30 Return to Hirosaki Station Browse for souvenirs on an unhurried walk back.

Highlights

The cherry blossoms of Hirosaki Park are stunning at full bloom, but the falling petals that carpet the moats in a pink raft are just as unforgettable. The castle keep has been temporarily moved from its usual spot for stone wall repairs, so its rare relocated form is a sight you can only see for now. The Western style buildings around town reflect the prosperity that apple farming brought to Meiji era Hirosaki.

Access and Tips

Buses, a loop bus, and rental bicycles all serve the park from Hirosaki Station. The grounds are large, so comfortable walking shoes help. The park is very crowded during the cherry blossom festival, so an early morning visit is far more pleasant. The Western buildings sit within walking distance, so it is efficient to see them right after the park.

A Quick Tip

Hirosaki is famous for apple pie, and every shop bakes it a little differently. Try a few and compare, and the trip will stay with you long after.
