Shimokita Peninsula Osorezan and Hotokegaura Course
Shimokita Peninsula Osorezan and Hotokegaura Course
The Shimokita Peninsula, the northernmost land of Honshu, is a place full of unique mystery. Osorezan, one of Japan's three great sacred mountains, is a desolate volcanic zone thick with the scent of sulfur, long spoken of as the boundary between this world and the next. On the western coast, Hotokegaura offers strange rocks carved by waves over ages of time. This course visits two landscapes, rugged yet beautiful, that belong to Shimokita alone.
Course Route
8:30 Start from central Mutsu Set off from Mutsu, the gateway to Shimokita, heading first for the sacred Osorezan.
9:00 Arrive at Osorezan Enter grounds heavy with the smell of sulfur, where the barren scenery creates a singular air.
9:30 Tour the Osorezan sacred site Walk the wasteland called the hell circuit, then catch your breath at the white sand and blue water of Lake Usori beyond it.
11:00 Back to Mutsu for lunch Fuel up on local flavors, then aim for the western coast in the afternoon.
13:00 Head to Hotokegaura Cross the peninsula to the striking scenery of the western shore.
13:45 Walk Hotokegaura Follow the path and view the towering pale green giant rocks up close.
15:30 Head home Return to Mutsu with the far edge of Honshu fresh in your memory.
Highlights
Osorezan leaves a fierce impression through the contrast between wasteland where volcanic gas escapes and the calm of Lake Usori. The white sand shore called Paradise Beach appears after the barren hell circuit, and its stillness sinks into the heart. At Hotokegaura, strange rocks tens of meters tall line the coast, overwhelming you like sculptures born of nature.
Access and Tips
The Shimokita Peninsula is broad and the distances are long, so traveling by car is convenient. Osorezan and Hotokegaura sit on opposite sides of the peninsula, so an early start gives you room to spare. The path at Hotokegaura is uneven, so sturdy walking shoes are essential. There is also a sightseeing boat from the sea, and the rocks seen from the water are just as remarkable.
A Quick Tip
At Osorezan the sulfur smell grows stronger with the wind. Tour within your comfort and pace, and face the scenery with a calm and quiet mind.
