Saruka Jinja

In the middle of the Tsugaru Plain, in Hirakawa City, sits Saruka Jinja, an ancient shrine that has long drawn special faith as the guardian deity of the eyes. Its pedigree reaches far back into antiquity, and tradition holds that when Sakanoue no Tamuramaro received divine inspiration and won a great victory during a campaign, a small shrine was enshrined here. Through its long history it has stayed close to the lives of the people and is also revered as a guardian for those born in the years of the Dragon and the Snake.

Within the grounds spreads the Kagami Pond, and in summer its whole surface is covered with lotus flowers. The sight of pale pink blossoms blanketing the water, together with the solemnity of the shrine, quietly washes the hearts of those who visit.
