Hirosaki Castle Cherry Blossom Festival โ€” Japan's Most Beautiful Castle and Sakura

When spring arrives in the Tsugaru region of Aomori, the ancient grounds of Hirosaki Castle (Hirosaki-jo) become the stage for what many consider the most beautiful cherry blossom festival in all of Japan. Over 2,600 cherry trees โ€” a mix of Somei Yoshino, weeping cherries, and rare varieties โ€” burst into bloom around the castle's moats, stone walls, and surrounding parkland, creating a landscape of incomparable pink splendor against the backdrop of the "Tsugaru Fuji" volcano, Mt. Iwaki.

Highlights

The festival's most beloved image is the moat completely covered in fallen cherry petals โ€” a "flower raft" (hanaikada) of pink floating on dark water, with the restored castle keep reflected above. This phenomenon typically occurs in late bloom, a week or so after peak โ€” arguably more beautiful than the bloom itself.

Hirosaki Castle is one of only twelve original surviving castle keeps in Japan, dating to 1611, making it a historically significant structure as well as a scenic backdrop. The castle park covers 49 hectares with cherry trees planted at different elevations and aspects, extending the bloom season across several weeks from late April through early May.

Evening illumination transforms the grounds: pink blossoms lit against dark sky and reflected in the moat create a dreamlike atmosphere. Food stalls and festival vendors line the paths, adding the warmth of communal celebration.

Getting There & Tips

From Hirosaki Station, walk or take a bus to the castle park (about 20 minutes on foot, 5 minutes by bus). JR Ou Line connects Aomori and Hirosaki directly. Festival entry fee applies during the cherry blossom period.

Best Time to Visit

Late April to early May (exact dates vary by year). The Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival runs for about two weeks. Check local bloom forecasts for peak timing. Weekday mornings are far less crowded than weekends.
