Aomori Nebuta Festival

One of the Three Great Festivals of Tohoku, the Aomori Nebuta Festival runs August 2–7. Giant three-dimensional illuminated floats and the dynamic dancing of "haneto" (jumping participants) enthrall massive crowds.

Festival Features

  • Large Nebuta: Over 20 floats up to 5m tall and 9m wide parade through the streets
  • Haneto Dancers: Anyone can participate in the "Rassera!" chanting dance in rented costumes
  • Harbor Finale: The last night (August 7) ends with harbor floats and fireworks
  • Nebuta Grand Prix: Annual judging awards the best float

Viewing Tips

  • Paid seating: Purchase through Aomori Prefecture Tourism or travel agencies
  • Free viewing: Standing along the parade route is possible

Getting There

  • From JR Aomori Station: about 10 minutes on foot to the route

Tips

Accommodation books up 6+ months ahead. Float workshop tours are possible before evening parades start. Festivities begin with a pre-festival event on August 2.
