Chiba Prefecture is easy to reach from Tokyo, yet it hides an impressive collection of breathtaking scenery that makes photographers and travel enthusiasts forget they are so close to the capital. From dramatic coastal cliffs and tranquil rivers to sweeping flower fields and panoramic viewpoints, Chiba is packed with spots that will have you reaching for your camera at every turn. Here are five handpicked locations where nature puts on a show worth sharing.

01 | Byobugaura (Choshi City) — Japan's Dover: Dramatic Seaside Cliffs

From Narai-machi in Choshi City to Gyobu-misaki in Asahi City, cliffs 40–50 meters high stretch for some 10 kilometers — a breathtaking sight. The area was designated a National Scenic Beauty Spot and Natural Monument in 2016. The contrast of blue sky, white cliffs, and sea creates a world that resembles a painting.

• Best time and season: Clear mornings in spring through summer are recommended
• Shooting point: From the promenade adjacent to Choshi Marina Beach, shooting horizontally along the line of cliffs enhances the sense of depth. The clifftops are extremely dangerous at height and also include private land; access is prohibited. Please photograph only from the promenade.
• Access: Approx. 15-minute bus or taxi ride from JR Choshi Station toward Choshi Marina (the promenade entrance is adjacent to Choshi Marina Beach)

02 | Yoro Valley (Ichihara City / Otaki Town) — Autumn Color Reflected in the River

Known as Chiba's secluded retreat, Yoro Valley is most spectacular during the peak foliage season from late November to early December. The red and yellow gradations reflected in the river surface have the beauty of a perfect mirror.

• Best time and season: Mornings at peak foliage, targeting windless days
• Shooting point: Crouch low at the water's edge and take advantage of the reflection with a low-angle shot
• Access: Take the Kominato Railway to "Yoro Keikoku Station." From the station, the main spots along the valley (toward Awamata Falls) are some distance away and require a bus or car. The surrounding roads become heavily congested during the foliage season.

03 | Tokyo German Village (Sodegaura City) — A Sea of Light Illuminating the Night

The winter illumination held from autumn through spring is a popular event where a carpet of light spreads across the hillside. Operating dates, lighting hours, and admission fees change year to year, so check the official website for the latest information before heading out.

• Best time and season: Just after sunset (magic hour) from October to March
• Shooting point: Look down from the hilltop to capture the flow of light. Using your smartphone's night mode will produce vivid results.
• Access: Approx. 3 km / 5 minutes by car from the Tateyama Expressway "Anesaki-Sodegaura IC." By train: from JR "Sodegaura Station," take the local bus (Nozomino / Hiraoka Line) for approx. 35 minutes; from JR Chiba Station, take the express bus "Kapina-go" for approx. 40 minutes. Admission is charged.

04 | Kujukuri Beach (Sanmu City to Ichinomiya Town) — A Sunset in Golden Orange

Kujukuri Beach, one of Japan's longest beaches, is in a class of its own as a sunset destination. The moment the setting sun dyes both sky and sea orange is something you will never forget once you have seen it.

• Best time and season: Evening 16:00–18:00; autumn through winter when the air is clear and colors are vivid
• Shooting point: Try a silhouette shot in backlight — including a figure in the foreground makes for a dramatic image. Kujukuri Beach is prone to rip current and high-wave accidents. Never turn your back to the sea or become so focused on shooting that you stop watching the waves.
• Access: Accessible by bus from JR Togane Line Togane Station or Omachi Station

05 | Mt. Takago (Kimitsu City) — A Sea of Clouds Above the Hidden Wilds of Chiba

This hidden gem of the Boso Peninsula has a summit view selected among Chiba Prefecture's "Scenic 100 Views." In late autumn and winter, the sight of mist rolling through the mountain valleys in early morning is mystical. Be aware, however, that the summit is not a drive-up viewpoint — it lies at the end of a hiking trail and is not somewhere you can easily drop in on.

• Best time and season: Just after dawn from November to February (the first 30 minutes after sunrise are crucial)
• Shooting point: From the summit, use a wide-angle lens to capture the mountain ridges while incorporating the foreground trees for added depth. If ascending before dawn, a headlamp is essential.
• Access: Drive from JR Uchibo Line "Sanukimachi Station" and others to the Ishiitaro Trailhead. From the trailhead: approx. 40 minutes to the Ishiitaro summit, then approx. 45 more minutes to Mt. Takago summit (round trip 3–4 hours). Wear long sleeves, long pants, and hiking boots. The nearest bus stop is approx. 2.8 km (approx. 40-minute walk) from the trailhead, and there are no convenience stores nearby, so prepare your own drinks in advance.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Best season and time of day: Byobugaura is best in the morning when the light spreads across the cliffs. The autumn leaves of Yoro Valley peak from late November to early December. The sunset scenery at Kujukurihama is best around sunset. Mount Takago is best in the early morning from late autumn through winter.
• Opening hours / event periods: Tokyo German Village is basically open 9:30 to 17:00 (last entry 16:00), and during the illumination period it opens at night. The period and lighting hours change from year to year, so check the official website.
• Admission: The promenade at Byobugaura, Kujukurihama and the hiking trails of Mount Takago are all free of charge. Tokyo German Village charges an admission fee (please check the official website for the latest prices).
• Access: Byobugaura is about 15 minutes by bus or taxi from JR Choshi Station toward Choshi Marina. Tokyo German Village is about 3 km (about 5 minutes by car) from the Anesaki-Sodegaura IC on the Tateyama Expressway, about 35 minutes by local bus (Nozomino / Hiraoka line) from JR Sodegaura Station, or about 40 minutes from JR Chiba Station on the Capina highway bus. For Mount Takago, the Ishiitaro trailhead is the starting point, and it is about 2.8 km (about 40 minutes on foot) from the nearest bus stop to the trailhead.
• Parking: Tokyo German Village has space for about 3,000 cars. For Byobugaura, use the parking area of Choshi Marina Beach.
• Photography rules: The top of the cliffs at Byobugaura includes private land and cannot be entered. Always shoot from the promenade. If you use a drone, the rules of each facility, beach and municipality apply in addition to the Civil Aeronautics Act. Do not fly without the permission of the manager.
• Safety notes: The clifftop at Byobugaura is very dangerous because of the height. At Kujukurihama, accidents caused by rip currents and high waves happen easily, so never take your eyes off the sea, even while shooting. Mount Takago is a mountain trail of three to four hours round trip, and you need clothing suited to mountain walking, such as long sleeves, long trousers and hiking boots. There is no convenience store nearby, so prepare drinks in advance, and if you climb before dawn, bring a headlamp.
