The Appeal of Chiba in Winter

Kamogawa Sea World — A Winter Aquarium Experience Like No Other

Kamogawa Sea World, located on the southern Boso Peninsula, is one of Japan's premier marine theme parks and is famous for spectacular shows featuring killer whales (orca), bottlenose dolphins, beluga whales, and Steller sea lions. In winter, the shows take on an even more dramatic character — the cold air intensifies the spectacle as orca leap from the water and the spray from their powerful dives reaches the audience.

The killer whale show, in particular, is unmissable. Watching these massive animals perform in perfect synchrony with their trainers — leaping, spinning, and generating waves that crash into the front rows — is an experience that defies description. Unlike crowded summer visits, winter allows you to find a good seat more easily and enjoy the performance with room to breathe.

• Best time: Weekdays in winter offer the most uncrowded experience. The whale shows during the winter holiday season have special programming.

Choshi — Cape Inubosaki and the Ocean in Winter

Inubosaki Cape, at the easternmost tip of the Kanto region, is where the Pacific Ocean's horizon stretches endlessly before you. In winter, the scenery here becomes raw and majestic: the lighthouse stands white against the iron-grey sea, the waves crash against the rocky shore with tremendous force, and the cold wind carries the pure, salt-heavy scent of the open ocean.

The lighthouse at Inubosaki — one of the oldest in Japan — is open to the public and offers a panoramic view of the ocean from the top. In winter, visibility is superb and on clear days you can see the silhouette of the Izu Peninsula far to the south. The winter sunrise viewed from Inubosaki Cape is a sight of breathtaking beauty — one of the finest sunrise spots in all of Japan.

Choshi is also famous as one of Japan's leading fishing ports, particularly for sardines, mackerel, and saury. The fresh seafood available at the Choshi fishing port market — especially in winter — is extraordinary in quality and extraordinarily good value.

• Access: From JR Choshi Station, take the Choshi Electric Railway to Inubo Station (about 20 minutes), then a 10-minute walk to the cape. By car from the Ken-O Expressway's Katori IC, approximately 40 minutes.
• Sunrise: Inubosaki is one of the earliest sunrise points in Japan during winter and is a pilgrimage site for photographers and early risers on New Year's Day.
• Seafood market: The Uoichiba (fish market) near Choshi Port is open to the public and has incredibly fresh fish at excellent prices.

Kisarazu — Illuminations and Tokyo Bay Views

Kisarazu City, on the western coast of the Boso Peninsula facing Tokyo Bay, transforms in winter into a city of light. Large-scale illumination events are held throughout the holiday season, and the entire waterfront area sparkles with millions of lights reflected in the calm waters of Tokyo Bay. The view of the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line (the bridge and tunnel connecting Kisarazu to Kawasaki) lit up at night against the winter sky is spectacular.

Mitsui Outlet Park Kisarazu, one of the largest outlet shopping centers in Japan, is particularly stunning during the winter illumination season, with elaborate light displays throughout the complex. It is a perfect destination for combining shopping, dining, and a beautiful nighttime atmosphere.

From Kisarazu, you can also take the ferry across Tokyo Bay to Kawasaki in Kanagawa — a scenic water crossing that gives you a unique perspective on the bay. In winter, the ferry ride with a warm drink in hand and city lights on the horizon is surprisingly romantic.

• Illuminations: The Mitsui Outlet Park Kisarazu illuminations typically run from November through late February.
• Ferry: Tokyo Bay Ferry connects Kisarazu to Kannonzaki and Kurihama in Kanagawa Prefecture — a fun alternative way to cross the bay.

Tips for a Winter Trip to Chiba

• Dress warmly: The Boso coastline is exposed to Pacific winds that can make it feel significantly colder than inland areas. Layers and a windproof outer layer are essential.
• Seafood season: Winter is when many of Chiba's best seafood shines — Tokyo Bay clams, Boso Peninsula lobster, and Choshi sardines and mackerel are at their finest.
• Avoid New Year's crowding: Inubosaki Cape and major temples and shrines in Chiba see significant New Year's crowds. If you want the winter landscapes without the crowds, aim for January weekdays after the holiday rush.
• Rent a car: The Boso Peninsula is best explored by car. Public transport is limited outside the main towns, and a car gives you the freedom to stop at scenic spots and local markets along the coast.
• Stay overnight: Chiba has excellent hot spring resorts, particularly in the Katsuura and Minamiboso areas. Soaking in an outdoor hot spring with an ocean view on a cold winter evening is a quintessential Japanese winter experience.
