Autumn Foliage in Fukuoka

In northern Kyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture is home to lesser-known autumn foliage spots that are well worth seeking out. Deep crimson maple leaves filling mountain valleys, golden ginkgo trees cascading over ancient temple rooftops — and all of it conveniently accessible from the city center, making these spots perfect for a weekend getaway. The typical viewing season runs from early October to late November. Because the timing of the color change varies with elevation, there is a delightful opportunity to chase the "peak of autumn" across the season. This fall, witness the brocade of nature that Fukuoka's landscapes create — with your own eyes.

Hikosan (Mt. Hiko)

Straddling the border of Fukuoka and Oita prefectures, the sacred peak of Hikosan has long been revered as a center of Shugendo mountain asceticism. Yet in autumn, the solemn atmosphere of its precincts transforms entirely. The maple trees lining the approach path blaze with brilliant red, and fallen leaves scattered across the stone pavement create a scene straight out of a historical scroll painting.

The most unmissable sight is the autumn foliage around Hikosan-gu Shrine's Hoheinden (Hall of Offerings). The moss-covered stone steps, the vermilion shrine hall, and the tapestry of autumn colors spreading behind them all overlap in layers, creating a space so otherworldly you can hardly believe you are in modern-day Fukuoka. The reflections of crimson leaves in the pond in front of the Hoheinden are also breathtaking — a scene that has captivated countless visitors year after year.

Access: About 80 minutes by car from Fukuoka City, or by BRT (bus rapid transit) "Hikoboshipeline" to Hikosan Stop (the rail section between Soeda and Hita/Yoake was converted to BRT bus service on August 28, 2023, following 2017 flood damage and the decision not to restore the railway), then by taxi. Best viewing period: Late October to mid-November.

Tip for travelers: Temperatures on the mountain can be 5–10°C lower than in the city. Clothing you can layer and comfortable walking shoes are essential. The official Hikosan-jingu site also instructs visitors to "please use the Bessho Car Park (free)" (the number of spaces is not published). The car park at the slope car's Hana Station is small, with room for 20 ordinary vehicles, so for weekends plan on using the Bessho Car Park.

Sefuri Mountains

The Sefuri Mountains form the natural backdrop of Fukuoka City, and the autumn foliage that covers these slopes in fall is a sight that locals cherish. While well-known among Fukuoka residents, this spot remains largely undiscovered by visitors from outside the prefecture — making it a true hidden gem.

Within the mountains, Nanzoin Temple in Sasaguri is famous for its giant reclining Buddha statue — the largest bronze statue in the world — and the surrounding temple grounds are particularly stunning in autumn. The contrast between the massive reclining Buddha and the blazing red and gold foliage creates an unforgettable image.

A short drive away, Kiyomizugaki Shrine is known for its beautifully colored autumn leaves surrounding the shrine buildings. The scenery here, where ancient cedar trees and colorful maples coexist, has a quiet dignity that rewards patient visitors.

Access: Nanzoin Temple is about 30 minutes by train from Hakata Station on the Sasaguri Line; then a short walk. Car access via the Fukuoka Urban Expressway is also convenient. Best viewing period: Mid to late November.

Tip for travelers: Always bring mountaineering boots or stiff-soled trekking shoes, rain gear and drinking water. There are no vending machines on the mountain, so stock up on food and water at a convenience store near the trailhead beforehand. For a hot spring after coming back down, "Higashisefuri Onsen Sazanka-no-yu" — listed on the Saga Prefecture official tourism site — is a sure bet (76-4 Isurugi, Yoshinogari-cho, Kanzaki-gun, Saga Prefecture / bathing 10:00–23:00, last reception 22:00 / open year-round / 150 free parking spaces / about 5 minutes from Higashisefuri IC on the Nagasaki Expressway).

Abuyama

Overlooking Fukuoka City, Abuyama (Mt. Aburayama) is a beloved natural park that offers stunning autumn foliage close to the city. The gentle mountain trails wind through a forest canopy of mixed trees — maple, ginkgo, beech — that turns into a tapestry of gold and red in autumn.

The Abuyama Prefectural Natural Park at the summit offers panoramic views over Fukuoka City and Hakata Bay. On a clear autumn day, the city skyline framed by vivid autumn leaves is a spectacular sight. The park also has well-maintained walking paths, making it a great destination for families and leisurely walkers.

There is also an outdoor BBQ area and forest adventure courses within the park, so a full day of outdoor activities combined with autumn foliage viewing is easily achievable.

Access: By public transport, the nearest bus stop is "Aburayama Danchi-guchi," from which it is about 10 minutes by taxi to ABURAYAMA FUKUOKA. A seasonal shuttle bus also operates on weekends and public holidays from April to November 2026, departing from the Nishitetsu Bus stop "Fukudai Seimei-mae" (near Fukudai-mae Station on the Subway Nanakuma Line) — note that this shuttle serves the farm area only, not the Shimin-no-Mori section. By car, it is about 10 minutes from Nozame IC on the Fukuoka Urban Expressway. Best viewing period: Mid-November to early December.

Tip for travelers: The walking paths are well maintained, but fallen leaves make the footing slippery in places. Footwear of at least sneaker grade is recommended. The neighbouring Aburayama Kannon (its temple name is Shokakuji; 508 Higashiaburayama, Jonan-ku, Fukuoka City) also has beautiful autumn colour and is worth visiting alongside it. Both the Fukuoka City cultural properties database and the city's official tourism site "Yokanavi" describe it with the words "the maples and the great ginkgo in the precincts are beautiful in late autumn." The combination of quiet temple halls and autumn foliage grants a special moment in which the heart quietly settles.

Minochi Valley (Asakura City)

In the inland Asakura region of Fukuoka, the Minochi Valley is one of the prefecture's most scenic spots for autumn foliage. The valley's clear mountain stream, rushing over boulders and creating small waterfalls, is lined with maple trees that burst into vivid red and orange in autumn — creating a picture-perfect scene of Japan's natural beauty.

The valley is relatively compact and can be explored on foot in a couple of hours, making it ideal for a relaxing autumn half-day trip. The sound of rushing water, the crunch of fallen leaves underfoot, and the vivid colors above combine to create a deeply restorative experience.

Access: About 1 hour by car from Fukuoka City. Best viewing period: Mid to late November.

Practical Information for the Autumn Foliage Season (Based on Official Announcements)

If you want to visit during peak foliage, always check prices and operating conditions on the official websites before you set out. This section compiles only primary information published by each facility or local authority as of 6 September 2026. Where a schedule is based on 2025 actual results, that is stated explicitly.

Hikosan Slope Car (Soeda Town)

This is the only transport link up to Hikosan-jingu Shrine's Hoheishaden (Main Hall). The line has three stations — Hana Station (foot of the mountain) → Sando Station → Kami Station (about 5 m below the Hoheishaden) — with Sando Station being a drop-off-only stop served solely by the lower car (front two cars of the consist).

• The official fare table carries a note stating "Fares are as of 1 April 2023," and these remain the current fares as of September 2026.
• Journey time: 7 minutes, departures roughly every 20 minutes. First upbound departure from Hana Station: 08:40; last: 16:40. First downbound from Kami Station: 08:50; last: 17:10.
• Open year-round (though the official site states explicitly: "Service may be suspended without notice due to weather or maintenance work").
• The car park at Hana Station holds 20 ordinary vehicles and 3 bus-sized spaces only. Kami Station is not accessible by car.
• Sando Station is accessible by stairs only and cannot be used by wheelchair or pushchair users (the slope car itself, Hana Station, and Kami Station are barrier-free).
• Pets may travel only if completely enclosed in a hard-sided carrier or cart with the lid fully closed. Carrying in arms, slings, or soft bags is not permitted.

⚠ A Google review posted on the official website's homepage states "It cost ¥750 per person return," but the official fare table shows ¥700 for a return ticket. Please do not use review prices as a basis for budgeting.

Hikosan-jingu Shrine (Soeda Town)

• Address: 1 Hikosan, Soeda-machi, Tagawa-gun, Fukuoka Prefecture
• The official site directs visitors to use the Bessho Car Park (free); the exact number of spaces is not published.
• The upper shrine (Jogu), located at the summit, is open on designated days only, from 09:00 to 16:00. Open dates are announced monthly via news posts on the shrine's official website. The Jogu is about 1 hour 30 minutes on foot from the Hoheishaden (above Kami Station), in a completely different location — do not assume that visiting Hikosan-jingu means you can also worship at the Jogu.
• Completion of restoration work on the Jogu was announced on 30 November 2025, but the same announcement states "Worship inside the hall will not be possible during the winter season." It could not be confirmed from official sources whether interior worship resumes in autumn 2026.
• The official website contains no information on visiting hours or admission fees for the Hoheishaden.

Soeda Town Municipal Bus (Hikosan Course)

• Fares in effect from 28 August 2023. Children under 4 travelling with a parent/guardian ride free.
• There is no change machine on board. Once the bus is full, no further passengers can board.
• Separate timetables apply for weekdays and weekends/holidays; the version valid from 1 April 2028 (Reiwa 10) is published online.

Mt. Sefuri

• The elevation is 1,055 m, as stated by both the Fukuoka City Sawara Ward official site and the Saga Prefecture tourism official site.
• The Fukuoka City Sawara Ward hiking-routes page carries a notice of a traffic restriction on the section from the Kuroya Route trailhead to Yahazu Pass due to tree felling and timber extraction work (approximately 1 December 2025 to 30 March 2026). The same page also notes "This was postponed and the restriction has since been lifted," but the current status of passage beyond that point is not clearly stated on any official source. If you plan to walk the ridge towards Yahazu Pass, contact the Fukuoka Forest Management Office (092-843-2100) before setting out.
• The number of spaces and any charges for car parks near the Shiihara trailhead are not stated on any official site.
• Whether or not the road to the summit of Mt. Sefuri (the Self-Defence Force road) is subject to winter closure, and when, could also not be confirmed from current official sources.

ABURAYAMA FUKUOKA (formerly Aburayama Citizens' Forest / Aburayama Farm)

• On 27 April 2023, the former "Aburayama Citizens' Forest" and "Aburayama Farm (formerly Mo-Mo Ranch Aburayama)" merged and reopened as ABURAYAMA FUKUOKA. The designated manager is Aburayama Regional Design.
• Opening hours: 09:00–18:00 (car park follows the same hours)
• Closed: The 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month (if a public holiday falls on a Wednesday, the closure moves to the following Wednesday)
• Admission is free
• Car parks: 540 spaces on the farm side, 190 on the citizens' forest side. For ordinary and compact vehicles: ¥300 for the first 3 hours from entry, then ¥100 per hour. Large vehicles: ¥2,000 per day. Motorcycles and bicycles: free.
• The Fukuoka City official page (Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Bureau) still bears the title "Aburayama Citizens' Forest," but the body text clearly states that it merged with Aburayama Farm in 2023. The name used for visitors is now ABURAYAMA FUKUOKA.
• Regarding the foliage peak at Mt. Aburayama, official materials describe it only as "late autumn," with no specific dates published.

Aburayama Kannon (Shokakuji Temple)

• The correct temple name is Shokakuji. It belongs to the Tofukuji school of Rinzai Zen; the mountain name is Higashiaburayama.
• Address: 508 Higashiaburayama, Jonan-ku, Fukuoka City (not Minami-ku)
• Hours listed on Fukuoka City's official tourism site "Yokanavi": 07:00–17:00
• Whether an admission fee is charged is stated on neither the temple's own website nor Yokanavi.

Worth the Extra Trip: Raisan Chinyoji Daihi-o-in Temple (Itoshima City)

This temple is home to Fukuoka's most celebrated foliage sight — a large maple tree estimated to be 400 years old. Admission prices were revised on 1 September 2025, so please do not set out based on old figures.

• Reception hours: 09:00–16:30
• Hall admission fee: Adult (high school age and above) ¥500 / Groups of 20 or more ¥400 / Junior high school age and under: free
• Mountain entry fee (1–30 November): If visiting only the outer garden and large maple, adult (high school age and above) ¥200; junior high school age and under: free. No group discount applies.
• The official reason given for the revision states: "Maintenance and management costs for the temple buildings have risen due to soaring prices." Figures of "¥400" or "¥100 for the large maple only" seen on travel portals and other sites are prices that applied on or before 31 August 2025.
• The peak of the large maple: the official FAQ says "approximately early to mid-November." The grounds have around 200 maple trees of various sizes, and "visitors can enjoy the overall colours through the end of November."
• Tripods and all other forms of stand are prohibited both inside the halls and outdoors. Drones are prohibited. Eating and drinking inside the precincts is not permitted. Pets are not allowed. Wheelchairs may be used in parts of the outer garden only; the halls are not accessible by wheelchair.
• Wedding ceremonies and all location shoots are prohibited in November (the official rules state "except during November and 31 December–17 January").
• The Itoshima City Tourism Association states approximately 120 car-park spaces. No charge is published.
• Public transport: Take the bus from the south exit of Chikuzen Maebaru Station (JR Chikuhi Line) on the Raisan route and alight at "Raizankannon-mae," then walk approximately 7 minutes. The fare on Itoshima City's community bus is a flat ¥200. However, on weekdays between 08:30 and 17:00, the only service is the pre-booking shared bus "Choiso-ko Yokamachi Mirai-go," which requires advance membership registration and reservation.

Worth the Extra Trip: Momiji Hachimangu Shrine (Sawara Ward, Fukuoka City)

• The official name is Momiji Hachimangu (もみじはちまんぐう). The spelling "Momiji Hachiman-gu" is not used in official materials. The festival name in official usage is also "Momiji Matsuri."
• Address: 1-26-55 Takatori, Sawara-ku, Fukuoka City / TEL: 092-821-2049
• 7 minutes' walk from Exit 4 of Fujisaki Station (Fukuoka City Subway Airport Line); 14 minutes from Exit 4 of Nishijin Station.
• The access page states "50 spaces in total beside the torii gate and beside the main hall," but the Momiji Matsuri notice warns: "There is almost no parking available. Please look for a nearby coin car park or visit by public transport." The car park is not usable during the festival, so treat public transport as your only option during the Momiji Matsuri period.

Worth the Extra Trip: Homanngu Kamado Shrine (Dazaifu City)

• Free to visit, precinct open at all times (votive-item counter open 08:30–18:00), no closure days. TEL: 092-922-4106 (09:00–17:00)
• The Dazaifu City official site states the car park as "100 spaces (¥400 per visit)," but the same page carries the caveat "Information is based on data collected at the time of the survey." The shrine's own official site gives only "paid car park (approx. 100 spaces)" with no fee stated.
• From Nishitetsu Dazaifu Station, take the community bus "Mahoroba-go" bound for Uchiyama — approximately 10 minutes, ¥100 — and alight at the terminus. On foot from Dazaifu Station: approximately 40 minutes.
• The shrine is said to have become a famous foliage spot through the tradition of planting maple saplings after a ritual purification (yakuharai); the precinct contains approximately 300 ginkgo and maple trees.
• 2025 actuals: colour change begins mid-November; peak late November to early December. Illumination: Saturday 22 November to Sunday 7 December, sunset until 21:00. Momiji Matsuri: Saturday 29 November to Sunday 30 November, 10:00–16:00 (cancelled in rain).
• ⚠ The Momiji Matsuri dates shift considerably from year to year (23–24 November in 2024; 29–30 November in 2025). Do not assume "usually around 23 November." Worth the Extra Trip: Akizuki (Asakura City)

• The foliage around the "Black Gate" (Kumon) of Akizuki Castle Ruins is listed on the Asakura City official site as peak: late November to early December. About 20 maple trees surround the gate; climbing the stone steps brings you to Suiyu Shrine.
• There is no illumination event (the Asakura City Tourism Association states explicitly: "There is no illumination. Please visit while it is still light"). Sugino Baba is open around the clock.
• ⚠ Sugino Baba street is not a pedestrian-only road — vehicles also use it (official caution).
• Akizuki car park: ordinary car ¥400; microbus ¥1,300; large bus ¥2,500. The capacity is not stated on any official source.
• The Asakura City official site advises: "Heavy road congestion is expected during the foliage season; please use public transport wherever possible."
• Access: from Amagi Railway "Amagi" Station, take Amagi Kanko Bus Akizuki Line (bound for Nodori) — approximately 20 minutes — and alight at "Hakubutsukan-mae."
