01 | Kamado Shrine (Dazaifu City)

Kamado Shrine, nestled at the foot of Mount Hooman, is a one-of-a-kind space where modern shrine architecture blends with nature. The autumn foliage season in particular is breathtakingly beautiful, with the vermillion shrine buildings and the blazing reds and oranges creating a contrast that feels like stepping into a painting.

• Best shooting time: 9–11 a.m., when soft morning light filters through
• Recommended composition: A vertical angle looking up from the base of the stone steps, to convey depth
• Access: About 10 minutes by community bus from Nishitetsu Dazaifu Station

02 | Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine (Dazaifu City)

Dazaifu Tenmangu, known as the head shrine of Tenmangu shrines across Japan. The plum grove of the "flying plum" legend along the approach blooms with white and pink blossoms from February to March, becoming a spectacular photo spot heralding the arrival of spring. The main hall entered its "Reiwa Grand Restoration" — the first in 124 years — in May 2023 (Reiwa 5), a renovation spanning approximately three years, during which the divine spirit was moved to a special temporary hall designed by architect Sousuke Fujimoto. The temporary hall is currently being dismantled, and the flow and appearance of the precincts may change. Please check the latest information on the official website before visiting.

• Best shooting time: Early morning when the crowds are thin is recommended
• Recommended composition: Shoot the stone-paved approach from a low angle to convey depth
• Access: 5 minutes on foot from Nishitetsu Dazaifu Station

03 | Miyajidake Shrine (Fukutsu City)

Miyajidake Shrine, world-famous for its "Hikari no Michi" (Path of Light). Twice a year, the setting sun sinks directly in line with the shrine's approach, creating the "Path of Light" phenomenon — photos of the golden approach have been shared millions of times on social media, making it a truly legendary spectacular view.

• Best shooting time: February and October at dusk (from 30 minutes before sunset)
• Recommended composition: The classic shot is standing at the top of the stone steps, facing toward the sea, and capturing the Path of Light straight ahead
• Access: About 10 minutes by bus from JR Fukuma Station, or about 25 minutes on foot

04 | Hikosan Jingu Shrine (Soeda Town)

Hikosan Jingu Shrine, enshrined on the sacred peak of Mount Hiko, is a mystical power spot quietly nestled deep in lush greenery. The stone-paved approach leading to the Honden Hall is as beautiful as a tunnel of green, and in particular the new green of May and early morning when mist hangs in the air feel like the entrance to another world.

• Best shooting time: Early morning when mist tends to form, and during the new green season
• Recommended composition: Stand to one side of the approach and place the stone paving along the center line of the frame, with green trees on both sides, for a symmetrical composition (avoid the center of the approach, called seichu, which is considered the path of the deities)
• Access: The section of the Hitahiko Line between "Soeda and Yoake/Hita" was damaged in the Northern Kyushu Heavy Rainfall of July 2017 and was not restored as a railway — since August 28, 2023, it has been operating as the BRT "Hikoboshi Line" (bus). Hikosan Station is now a bus stop. From the Kokura direction, take the train to Soeda Station and transfer to the BRT or Soeda Town bus. By car, set your navigation to "Hikosan Slope Car" (1487 Oaza Hikosan, Soeda Town) and park at the free Bessho parking lot.

05 | Shikaumi Shrine (Higashi Ward, Fukuoka City)

Shikaumi Shrine, dedicated to the god of the sea, has a seaside location overlooking the Genkai Sea as its greatest appeal. The gradient of blue sea and sky spreading beyond the torii gate promises a postcard-perfect shot. The open, refreshing photos you can take with the sea breeze in your face have a freshness unlike any other power spot.

• Best shooting time: Sunny afternoons, when light sparkles on the sea's surface
• Recommended composition: The classic angle of using the torii as a frame with the sea and sky as the backdrop
• Access: About 20 minutes by bus from Nishitetsu Kashiihanaen-mae Station

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Opening and worship hours / closing days: Dazaifu Tenmangu opens at 6:00 a.m. from the spring equinox and at 6:30 a.m. from the autumn equinox. It closes at 7:00 p.m. in April-May and September-November, at 7:30 p.m. in June-August, and at 6:30 p.m. from December to March. The upper shrine (Jogu) of Hikosan Jingu is open only on limited days; the monthly opening schedule and whether it is open on a given day are announced on the official website. It is not opened when a typhoon is approaching, for example.
• Fees: Worship within the precincts is free of charge at Dazaifu Tenmangu, Miyajidake Shrine, Hikosan Jingu, Kamado Shrine and Shikaumi Shrine. Some facilities, such as the treasure hall at Dazaifu Tenmangu, charge admission.
• Access: Hikosan Jingu is at 1 Hikosan, Soeda Town, Tagawa District, Fukuoka Prefecture. Because the section between Soeda and Hita on the Hitahikosan Line is suspended due to the northern Kyushu torrential rain of July 2017 (Heisei 29), travellers from the Kokura direction take the train as far as Soeda Station and change to a bus. Miyajidake Shrine is at 7-1 Miyaji Motomachi, Fukutsu City, Fukuoka Prefecture.
• Parking: At Hikosan Jingu, use the free Bessho parking lot. Set your car navigation system to "Hikosan Slope Car" or "1487 Hikosan, Soeda Town, Tagawa District, Fukuoka Prefecture."
• Etiquette for worship: At Dazaifu Tenmangu the main hall is undergoing the "Great Reiwa Restoration," and the place of worship and visitor routes change as the work progresses. Please follow the signage in the precincts and the guidance of the staff. When making the round of the eight Okunomiya shrines at Miyajidake Shrine, allow yourself plenty of time and follow the designated route.
• Photography rules: Miyajidake Shrine prohibits the unauthorised reproduction or copying of the photographs and illustrations published on its official website. For commercial photography within the precincts, please check with each shrine in advance.
• Safety notes: Hikosan is a mountain area known as a sacred peak, and the path up to the upper shrine amounts to a mountain climb. Do not push on in bad weather, and check the official website for information on whether the upper shrine is open before setting out.

Note: The main hall of Dazaifu Tenmangu has been undergoing the "Great Reiwa Restoration" for about three years since May 2023 (Reiwa 5), and the temporary hall is currently being dismantled. As the way of worshipping may change, please check the notices on the official website just before your visit.
