5 Photogenic Power Spots in Gunma

Gunma Prefecture, blessed since ancient times with sacred mountains and pristine water, is actually a lesser-known treasure trove of "photogenic power spots." At these places where mystical light and atmosphere linger, why not aim for a truly breathtaking shot?

① Haruna Shrine (Takasaki City) — A World of Mystery Woven by Rock Faces and Vermilion

The approach surrounded by sheer massive rocks feels like the entrance to another world. The Soryu-mon gate (built 1855), a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, and the sight of the main hall appearing to be thrust into the Omisugiiwa rock face that enshrines the divine body are breathtaking — especially stunning in the deep-green summer and in autumn with the foliage. The long-running preservation and repair work on the main hall, haiden, and heiden has been completed and the shrine is now open for worship, though preservation repair on the Kaguraden hall is scheduled to continue until December of Reiwa 10 (2028).

• Best shooting time: Early morning hours (when light filters in and mist adds a fantastical touch)
• Recommended angle: Aiming at the Zuijin-mon gate head-on from a low angle gives a powerful shot with the rock face.
• Access: About 70 minutes by bus from JR Takasaki Station; get off at the "Haruna Jinja" bus stop. From the entrance Zuijin-mon gate to the haiden, walk up the approach for about 15 minutes.

② Shorinzan Daruma-ji Temple (Takasaki City) — Instagram-Worthy Japanese Modern Aesthetic of Daruma Dolls and a Zen Garden

A Huangbo (Obaku) Zen temple (296 Hanatakacho, Takasaki City) symbolizing Takasaki, Japan's leading producer of daruma dolls. The sight of colorful daruma dolls lined up in the "Darumado" hall, where daruma from all over Japan are gathered, is perfect for pop and distinctive Instagram photos. Temple office, fuda-ba (prayer tablet area), and Darumado are open 9:00–17:00; parking is free.

• Best shooting time: Daytime hours from morning to afternoon
• Recommended angle: Blur a daruma in the foreground and include the main hall in the background for a composition with depth.
• Access: About 20 minutes on foot from JR Shinetsu Main Line "Gunma-Yawata Station," or about 30 minutes by Gururin "Shorinzan Line" bus from JR Takasaki Station West Exit, alighting at "Shorinzan Iriguchi."

③ Akagi Shrine (Maebashi City) — A Spectacular Torii Gate Floating on the Lakeside of Mt. Akagi

The red torii gate standing on the shore of Onuma Lake, reflected in the lake's surface, is breathtaking. In the autumn foliage season the water surface blazes with color like fire, spreading a scene like a single painting.

• Best shooting time: Early morning (the lake surface becomes mirror-still, ideal for reflection photography)
• Recommended angle: Use a low angle close to the water's edge to capture the torii gate and its water reflection together.
• Access: About 60 minutes by bus from Maebashi Station; get off at "Akagi-yama Visitor Center" and walk about 5 minutes.

④ Fukiware-no-Taki Falls / Around Masutobi-no-Taki Falls (Numata City) — Dynamic Nature Photography

Fukiware-no-Taki, also called the "Niagara of the East." The thundering water that splits and plunges is an overwhelming spectacle, and you can aim for a shot brimming with negative ions. From May to June with fresh foliage, the water volume is high and the emerald green water is particularly beautiful.

• Best shooting time: On overcast days (light hits evenly, making the water color vivid). Note that the promenade is closed during winter (mid-December to late March), during which time the falls can be viewed from the Rokkakudo pavilion.
• Recommended angle: Make the split in the falls the main subject from the promenade. White lines are painted on the bedrock, and fatal falls have occurred in the past. Absolutely do not step past the white lines toward the river.
• Access: About 40 minutes by bus from JR Numata Station; get off right at the "Fukiware-no-Taki" bus stop.

⑤ Myogi Shrine (Tomioka City) — A Hidden Gem of Joshu with Strange Rocks and a Brilliantly Colored Shrine

The strikingly ornate Chinese-style shrine architecture standing against a backdrop of bizarre rock mountains is an overwhelming sight. The combination of the rugged silhouette of Mt. Myogi and the brilliant shrine buildings makes this Gunma's most dramatic spot.

• Best shooting time: Evening (the rock faces glow red and the golden hour light illuminates the shrine)
• Recommended angle: A vertical composition looking up from the bottom of the stone steps, capturing both the shrine and the strange rocks together.
• Access: About 10 minutes by taxi from JR Matsuida Station

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Opening and worship hours / closing days: At Shorinzan Darumaji Temple the temple office and amulet counter and the Daruma Hall are open from 9:00 to 17:00 (reception for prayers 9:00-16:00, the shop Darudaru 10:00-16:00, reception for the daruma painting experience 10:00-15:40). The precincts of Haruna Shrine can be visited freely during daylight hours.
• Fees: Worship within the precincts is free of charge at both Haruna Shrine and Shorinzan Darumaji Temple. Viewing Fukiware Falls is also free of charge.
• Access: For Haruna Shrine, take a bus from JR Takasaki Station for about 70 minutes and get off at Haruna Jinja, then walk about 15 minutes along the approach from the Zuishinmon gate to the worship hall. Shorinzan Darumaji Temple is about a 20-minute walk from JR Gunma-Yawata Station, or about 30 minutes on the Gururin bus Shorinzan Line from the west exit of Takasaki Station, getting off at Shorinzan Iriguchi.
• Parking: Shorinzan Darumaji Temple has free parking. Parking lots are also provided around Haruna Shrine and Fukiware Falls.
• Etiquette when worshipping: The Misugata-iwa rock at Haruna Shrine is the object of worship itself. Never step inside the fences or enter areas closed to visitors.
• Photography rules: There are places inside the shrine and temple halls where photography is not permitted. The approach paths and stone steps are narrow, so if you use a tripod take care not to obstruct other visitors.
• Safety notes: The promenade at Fukiware Falls is closed for the winter from mid-December to late March (while it is closed the falls can be viewed from the Rokkakudo hall). Beyond the white line painted on the rock bed, on the river side, there is a risk of falling, and fatal accidents have occurred in the past. The path is also closed when the water rises suddenly, and in the past the promenade has been closed because of bear sightings in the area. Check the latest conditions on the official Numata City website before you visit.

Note: At Haruna Shrine the conservation work on the main shrine, offering hall and worship hall has been completed, but the conservation work on the kagura hall is scheduled to continue until December of Reiwa 10 (2028).
