Hiroshima Flower Festival: A Golden Week Parade of Peace

Every year from May 3 to May 5, the centre of Hiroshima turns into an open-air stage of flowers, brass bands and street food. The Hiroshima Flower Festival has taken over Heiwa Odori (Peace Boulevard) and Peace Memorial Park in Naka Ward since the first edition in 1977. Organisers call it a festival of peace flowers connecting Hiroshima with the world, and Hiroshima City reports that more than a million people take part each year. For three days over Golden Week, the wide tree-lined avenue laid out during the city's postwar reconstruction becomes the brightest place in the prefecture.

The Flower Grand Parade

The festival opens on May 3 with the Flower Grand Parade along Peace Boulevard. According to the organising committee, more than 90 groups and over 6,000 participants take part along a route of roughly 1.2 kilometres. Marching bands, matching costumes and flower-covered formations follow one after another with almost no gap between them, and the pavements fill several people deep. Colour, brass and the smell of grilling food arrive all at once, and a road that normally carries four lanes of traffic each way becomes one enormous stage.

Stages, Booths and the Taste of Hiroshima

The parade is only part of it. Official information lists around 30 stages across the site, with more than 250 groups performing over the three days: yosakoi dance teams, taiko drummers, kagura troupes, wind orchestras and school clubs. Roughly 130 food and drink booths line the side roads, and around 80 plaza and booth areas are set up in total, a good chance to try the layered okonomiyaki the city is famous for or seafood from the Seto Inland Sea. On the final day a Performance Parade brings yosakoi, dance and baton teams back onto the avenue.

A Festival That Begins Months Earlier

Not all of the flowers arrive on a truck the morning of the event. Through the Peace Flower Project, around 150 schools and facilities grow flowers in advance, and those plants are used to decorate the venue. That detail explains a lot about why this event, for all its crowds and loudspeakers, is still described as a peace festival rather than a spring carnival. The venue also sits directly beside Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome, so the noise of the parade and the quiet of the memorial grounds exist side by side within a few minutes' walk.

Tips for Visiting

The heaviest crowds come during the Grand Parade on the first day and in the late afternoon each day. For an unobstructed view of the parade you need to claim a spot on the kerb well before it starts. An easier alternative is to let the parade come to you: follow it by ear while working through the food booths and the stages nearer Peace Memorial Park. Early May in Hiroshima can be genuinely hot, and shade is limited once the crowds fill in, so bring a hat and something to drink. The site is long, so comfortable shoes matter. Pushchairs are hard to manoeuvre at peak times.

Getting There

The venue is right in the middle of Hiroshima and public transport is by far the easiest option. City tram stops such as Chuden-mae and Fukuromachi are a short walk away, and the ride from JR Hiroshima Station takes about 15 minutes. Hiroshima Bus Center is also within walking distance. During the festival, large-scale traffic restrictions are in place around Peace Boulevard and city bus routes that normally run along it are diverted, so check service information before you set out.
