Shirogane Blue Pond — A Fantastical Landscape Captivating the World

Tucked in the forests near Biei in central Hokkaido, the Shirogane Blue Pond (Aoiike) is one of Japan's most photographed natural wonders — a body of water so impossibly vivid in color that it looks digitally enhanced. Dead silver birch trees rise from the surface like ghostly sentinels, their white trunks reflected in water that shimmers between brilliant turquoise and deep cobalt blue depending on the light and season.

Highlights

The pond's extraordinary color comes from colloidal aluminum hydroxide — natural minerals that leach from the nearby Shirogane Hot Springs and scatter sunlight in the blue spectrum. The result is a hue that changes subtly through the day: electric turquoise in morning light, deep indigo under overcast skies, and golden-silver at sunset. Apple used it as a default macOS wallpaper, introducing it to millions worldwide.

The surrounding forest adds to the drama — in summer, fresh green birch and deciduous trees frame the blue water; in autumn, golden and orange foliage creates a stunning contrast; in winter, snow-laden trees and illuminated winter evenings (nightly light-up events run December through March) transform the scene into a fairy tale.

The pond was created accidentally as an erosion control measure after the 1988 Mt. Tokachi volcanic eruption — nature and engineering combining to produce unexpected magnificence.

Getting There & Tips

From Biei Station, take a bus toward Shirogane Onsen (about 20 minutes) and walk 5 minutes to the pond. A rental car offers more flexibility. A small parking area and wooden walkway surround the pond — respectful viewing is important as the site is fragile. Winter illumination runs daily from sunset.

Best Time to Visit

All seasons are spectacular but distinct. Summer (June–August) for lush greenery; autumn (September–October) for foliage; winter (December–February) for illumination and snow scenery. Morning light typically produces the most vivid blue color.
