Furano and Biei Lavender Fields โ€” Hokkaido Dyed Purple in Summer

Every July, the gentle rolling hills of Furano and Biei in central Hokkaido transform into one of Japan's most iconic summer landscapes โ€” vast fields of lavender stretching in purple waves across patchwork farmland, set against the backdrop of the Tokachi mountain range. The fragrance alone is enough to draw visitors from across Japan and around the world, but the visual spectacle of purple, pink, and white blooms covering the hillsides is truly unforgettable.

Highlights

Tomita Farm, established in 1903, is the most famous lavender destination in Hokkaido, with carefully curated fields of lavender alongside poppies, salvia, and other seasonal flowers creating a living palette of color. The farm's lavender ice cream, soap, and essential oils have become beloved souvenirs. Farm Tomita is at its peak from late June through mid-July.

The Biei patchwork hills โ€” fields of wheat, sunflowers, and potatoes divided by windbreak rows of trees โ€” create a gentle, pastoral beauty reminiscent of Provence. Cycling through these hills on a sunny morning, with the mountains ahead and flowers on either side, is one of Hokkaido's great simple pleasures.

Furano town itself offers year-round appeal: renowned cheese and wine production, the popular drama filming location of Kita no Kuni Kara, and world-class skiing in winter. The region embodies a relaxed, agricultural Hokkaido lifestyle far from the urban bustle of Sapporo.

Getting There & Tips

From Sapporo, take the limited express to Furano (about 2 hours). Rental cars or bicycles are ideal for exploring the dispersed farm locations. The Norokko sightseeing train runs seasonally between Furano and Biei through lavender country.

Best Time to Visit

Late June through mid-July for peak lavender. Early July is optimal. The broader flower season extends from June through August with different blooms. Avoid peak weekends if possible โ€” weekday mornings offer peaceful photography conditions.
