Kobe City One Day Course from Kitano to Nankinmachi and Harborland

This is a classic one day course that packs in the charms of the port city of Kobe. You start in Kitano, where Western style mansions line the hillside, enjoy lunch in the lively Chinatown of Nankinmachi, and end the day watching the night view by the sea at Harborland. Almost everything is reachable by train and on foot, so it suits first time visitors well.

Course Route

9:00 Start at Sannomiya Station on the JR, Hankyu and subway lines Walk about ten minutes up the northern slope toward the Kitano area. 9:15 Stroll through the Kitano foreign residences Mansions such as the Scale House, the Weathercock House and the Moegi House, built in the Meiji era, are scattered here. The Weathercock House and the Moegi House are designated Important Cultural Properties of the nation. There are many slopes, so comfortable shoes are recommended. 11:00 Walk down from Kitano toward Motomachi Head south while glancing at the stylish shops along Tor Road. 11:45 Lunch in Nankinmachi This is Kobe Chinatown, where you can sample steamed pork buns, soup dumplings and dim sum on the go, or sit down at a restaurant. 13:30 Retro architecture in the former foreign settlement Walk the streets lined with grand modern buildings and take photos on the way to Harborland. 15:00 Meriken Park Enjoy the harbor scenery at the Port Tower and the seaside plaza. 16:30 Kobe Harborland umie Take a break with shopping or a cafe. The Ferris wheel is an easy landmark. 18:00 Finish with the night view at the evening harbor The illuminated port scenery is a perfect way to close the day.

Highlights

The Kitano residences are full of exotic atmosphere and are a classic spot for very Kobe like photos. Nankinmachi is a treasure trove for street food, and the former settlement offers a calm, refined townscape. The sunset and night view from Harborland are a highlight of any Kobe trip.

Practical Travel Notes

• Best season and time: Since the harbor night view is the star, arriving around Harborland a little before sunset is ideal. Winter, when the illuminations are lit, is especially colorful.
• Avoiding crowds: Nankinmachi is very busy at lunchtime on weekends. Having lunch early in the 11 oclock hour lets you avoid the lines and enjoy the street food at ease.
• Time guide: Allow one to two hours for the Kitano residences, about one hour for lunch and a stroll in Nankinmachi, and the rest of the afternoon for the walk from the former settlement to Harborland and the night view, and it fits neatly into a full day.
• Budget feel: Some of the Kitano residences offer a combined ticket for several houses. Even including street food, the Ferris wheel and admission to the Port Tower, it stays within a day trip range.
• Real nearby spots: The Weathercock House and Moegi House in Kitano, Meriken Park and Kobe Port Tower by the sea, and the umie shopping complex at Kobe Harborland are the stars of this course. The City Loop bus is also available from Sannomiya.

Access and Tips

The starting point of Sannomiya is a transport hub where several lines meet. You can walk from Kitano to Harborland, but if you get tired the subway Kaigan Line or the City Loop bus make things easier. There are many slopes, so wear comfortable walking shoes.

A Quick Tip

The harbor can get chilly in the evening, so a light layer is reassuring in any season. Nankinmachi is crowded on weekends, so a slightly early lunch is recommended. Kitano has many slopes, so tackling the climb while you still have energy and then heading south downhill makes for easier walking.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Assumptions for this course: A one-day course of about 9 hours (9:00 to 18:00) / starting from Sannomiya, it can be completed almost entirely by train and on foot. Kitano has many slopes, so wear comfortable walking shoes
• Opening hours and closing days of each facility: The Weathercock House is open 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:45), closed on the third Tuesday of every month (the following day when that Tuesday is a public holiday). The Moegi House is open 9:30 to 18:00 (last entry 17:45). The houses of the "Uroko Group," such as the Uroko House, each have their own opening hours and closing days, so check the official sites for the latest information
• Price guide: Weathercock House 500 yen for adults, Moegi House 500 yen for adults, and a combined ticket for the two houses 800 yen. For the Uroko Group, the "Kitano 7 Houses Premium Pass" is 3,300 yen for adults and 880 yen for children, the "Yamanote 4 Houses Pass" 2,200 yen for adults and 550 yen for children, and the "Kitano-dori 3 Houses Pass" 1,540 yen for adults and 330 yen for children. The Weathercock House and Moegi House are free for high school students and younger (18 and under) and for Kobe residents aged 65 and over
• Access: Sannomiya, the starting point, is where JR Sannomiya Station, Hankyu Kobe-Sannomiya Station and Sannomiya Subway Station come together. Kitano is about a 10-minute walk up the hill. The "City Loop" sightseeing bus can also be used from Sannomiya
• Points to note and safety: Each of the foreign residences is run by a different operator, and combined tickets can only be used within the same operating group. The Moegi House opens at 9:30, so if you arrive in the 9 o'clock hour it is smoother to visit the Weathercock House first. The harbor turns chilly in the evening, so bring something to put on whatever the season
