Amihari Onsen: A Scenic Spring on the Slopes of Mount Iwate
Amihari Onsen
High on the flank of Mount Iwate, on an elevated highland, Amihari Onsen is a spring of distinguished lineage known since ancient times. Said to date to the Heian period, its inns are set where the mountain looms overhead. Long loved as a trailhead for Mount Iwate, it links mountain walks with a warm soak.
Highlights
From the well-placed open-air baths you can take in the forests spreading across the foothills and the distant ranges beyond. The sulfur-scented water warms you thoroughly, and together with the mountain air it eases both body and mind. A little way off lies a wilder open-air bath fed by free-flowing source water, adding to the pleasure of a bathing tour.
Enjoying the Seasons
From spring into summer, fresh greenery and highland flowers spread out and hikers fill the area. Autumn brings splendid foliage across Mount Iwate, when the view from the baths reaches its peak. In winter the slopes bustle as a ski area, and you can enjoy a bath amid the snow.
Access and Basic Information
The spring is about forty minutes by car from JR Morioka Station, at the end of a road climbing the flank of Mount Iwate. Day bathing is available, and many stop by before or after hiking or skiing.
A Quick Tip
At this elevation the weather changes quickly, so an extra layer is reassuring. The scenic open-air baths are especially fine on a clear morning.
