Matsukawa Onsen: Milky Sulfur Waters of the Hachimantai Valley
Matsukawa Onsen
In the folds of Hachimantai, along the Matsukawa gorge, this spring lets you feel the power of the earths heat up close. White steam rises from many points in the valley, and nearby stands one of Japans earliest geothermal power plants. A few inns cluster together in this quiet, atmospheric setting.
Highlights
The water is a milky sulfur bath, and the thick flakes of mineral drifting through it show the strength of the source. From the open-air bath ringed by trees, the gorge opens out before you, wrapped in rising steam and the scent of the forest. The rugged valley shaped by geothermal heat is a sight unique to this place.
Enjoying the Seasons
From spring into summer it serves well as a base for climbing and hiking on Hachimantai. In autumn the foliage dyeing the valley makes a beautiful contrast with the milky water and draws many visitors. Winter cloaks the area in deep snow, offering the luxury of a rich bath amid a world of white.
Access and Basic Information
The spring is about an hour and a half by car from JR Morioka Station, up a mountain road toward Hachimantai. Day bathing is available, and many stop by while hiking or sightseeing in the area.
A Quick Tip
Because the sulfur content is high, rinsing off well after your bath is reassuring. The road ices easily in winter, so do not forget to prepare for snowy conditions.
