Tsunagi Onsen
West of Morioka on the shore of Lake Gosho, Tsunagi Onsen is often called the citys hidden parlor, an easy escape from the urban center. Its name is linked by legend to a warrior of the Heian era, hinting at its long history. The open lakeside scenery is this springs greatest charm.
Highlights
Many of the inns face Lake Gosho, and from the open-air baths you can gaze across the calm water to Mount Iwate rising beyond. The smooth sulfur water is reputed to leave the skin soft, and the pleasant warmth lingers long after your bath. Follow the lakeside paths and the scenery shifts gently with the seasons.
Enjoying the Seasons
In spring, cherry blossoms along the shore mirror on the water; in summer, a breeze off the lake brings cool relief. Autumn pairs the foliage of Mount Iwate with the lake in fine harmony, while winter draws a crisp scene of the snow-capped mountain above a quiet surface.
Access and Basic Information
The resort is about thirty minutes by bus from JR Morioka Station, or a short drive from the Morioka interchange. Many inns accept day bathers, making it easy to combine with sightseeing in the city.
A Quick Tip
At dusk the lake glows amber, making the view from the open-air bath especially fine. To see Mount Iwate at its clearest, the crisp morning hours are also a good choice.
