Nyuto Onsen β Ultimate Hot Spring Retreat in a Hidden Valley
High in the mountains of central Akita Prefecture, where forested ridges rise steeply above narrow valleys still holding snow into April, lies one of Japan's most celebrated hot spring clusters: Nyuto Onsen. Seven distinct inns and their associated hot springs are scattered across the mountainside, each with different mineral compositions, temperatures, and atmospheres β but all sharing a quality of genuine remoteness, pure water, and a connection to nature that represents the ideal of the traditional Japanese mountain hot spring experience.
Highlights
The seven Nyuto Onsen facilities β Tsurunoyu, Magoroku, Kuroyu, Ganiba, Ogama, Kyukamura, and Tsuru no Yu (the most famous) β each have their own character. Tsurunoyu is the most historic and atmospheric: thatched roofs, outdoor baths of milky white sulfurous water enclosed by bamboo screens and mountain forest, founded in 1638. The outdoor mixed bath (konyoku) enclosed by wooden fences and forest is one of Japan's most iconic hot spring images.
A Nyuto Onsen passport allows visitors to try all seven facilities, and many guests plan multi-day stays to work through several. The forested roads between the facilities are pleasant walks in summer and autumn; in winter, snowshoes or a vehicle with snow tires are necessary.
Nearby Tazawako (Lake Tazawa), Japan's deepest lake at 423 meters, is visible from several mountain viewpoints and makes an excellent companion visit.
Getting There & Tips
From Tazawako Station on the JR Akita Shinkansen line, take a bus to Nyuto Onsen (about 50 minutes). Direct buses run to Tsurunoyu. Advance reservation for any inn stay is essential β especially Tsurunoyu, which books months ahead.
Best Time to Visit
Autumn (late SeptemberβOctober) for brilliant foliage with hot springs; winter for snow-buried tranquility; spring for snowmelt atmosphere. Summer is lush and green but the most popular season.
