Kagoshima City Sakurajima and Sengan-en and Tenmonkan Course

Across the bay rises Sakurajima, and its plume of smoke can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. This full-day course takes in the unique scenery of a town that lives alongside a volcano, pairing a garden linked to the Shimazu clan with the lively downtown. By mixing walking, the streetcar, and the ferry, even first-time visitors can get around with ease.

Course Route

9:00 Start at Kagoshima-Chuo Station Hop on the streetcar or a bus toward the sightseeing area. Leave your bags in a coin locker and set off light.

9:30 Stroll through Sengan-en Built as a villa for the Shimazu family, this feudal-lord garden uses Sakurajima as a distant hill and Kinko Bay as its pond. Give it around ninety minutes at a relaxed pace.

11:30 Learn history at Shoko Shuseikan This industrial heritage site next to the garden shows how advanced the Satsuma domain was at the close of the Edo period.

12:30 Lunch with Kurobuta pork Head back downtown for the local specialty of black pork cutlet or shabu-shabu.

14:00 Cross by Sakurajima ferry The crossing to Sakurajima port takes about fifteen minutes. Look back from the deck for a sweeping view of the city.

14:30 Visitor center and Yunohira Observatory Learn how the volcano formed, then take in the mountainside up close from the observatory.

17:30 Dinner in Tenmonkan The city's main entertainment district, packed with shaved-ice shops and Satsuma cuisine, buzzes into the night.

Highlights

The undisputed star is Sakurajima. You can enjoy this ever-changing active volcano from many angles, from the garden, from the boat, and from the observatory. The borrowed-scenery layout of Sengan-en clearly shows the Japanese garden idea of drawing a natural mountain into the design itself.

Access and Tips

A one-day streetcar pass is handy and economical for getting around downtown. The Sakurajima ferry runs around the clock, so you can cross without watching the time. Buses on the Sakurajima side are limited, so check the loop-bus timetable in advance for peace of mind.

A Quick Tip

Depending on the wind, volcanic ash can fall even in the city center. A hat and sunglasses make things more comfortable, and glasses can be safer than contact lenses.
