Shirokuma
Shirokuma is a shaved ice born in Kagoshima, softly shaved ice drizzled with condensed milk and dressed with colorful fruit, sweet beans, and agar jelly. The name, meaning polar bear, is said to come from how the topping resembles a bear face seen from above. Today it is a signature dessert known well beyond the prefecture.
Highlights
The ice, soaked with plenty of condensed milk, melts the moment it touches your tongue, spreading a gentle sweetness. Cherries, mandarin, pineapple, and raisins sit atop in cheerful color, lively to the eye. Toppings and the milk blend differ by shop, so comparing them is part of the fun.
Enjoying the Seasons
Summer is the true season. Under a strong sun, a bowl of shirokuma soaks into a body warmed by a walk through Tenmonkan. In recent years some shops serve it year round, and enjoying one in a cozy interior in winter has its own charm.
Access and Basic Information
Sweet shops and cafes around Tenmonkan are the home ground, a short step from the Tenmonkandori tram stop. Popular places draw summer lines, but they reward you with an exceptional bowl.
A Quick Tip
The portions are quite large, so sharing is a good idea. It melts fast, so once you have taken a photo, dig in without delay.
