① Shimanto River | A Mirror World Created by Japan's Last Clear Stream

The Shimanto River, known as "Japan's last clear stream," reflects the sky and surrounding greenery in its crystalline surface like a natural mirror. Combined with the submersible bridges (chinkabashi), the composition is truly one of a kind.

• Instagram tip: The silhouette of a guardrail-free bridge floating on the surface of the river is hauntingly beautiful. The bridges were designed without guardrails from the outset so that they offer little resistance to floodwaters — they are built to be submerged during high water (Shimanto City). Please be aware that there are no fall-prevention railings.
• Best time: Early morning when mist hangs over the river / the golden hour at dusk
• Shooting angle: A horizontal composition from the riverbank with the bridge set at a diagonal is recommended.
• Access: Submersible bridges dot the entire Shimanto River basin. Free parking along Prefectural Road 340 is available for the Sada Submersible Bridge — the lowest and longest on the river (total length 291.6 m, width 4.2 m; built in 1972) (Shimanto City / Shimanto City Tourism Association).

② Muroto Cape | A Raw, Untamed Coastline at the Edge of the Pacific

• Access: About a 20-minute drive from the "Nankoku IC" exit on the Kochi Expressway. The tourist course takes approximately 40 minutes.

④ Tosashimizu / Ashizuri Cape | A Spectacular Cape Where the Kuroshio Current Meets the Sky

Ashizuri Cape, the southernmost point of Shikoku, offers the perfect photographic subject: the Kuroshio Current spreading below and a gleaming white lighthouse above. On a clear day, the blue of the sea takes your breath away.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Best season and time of day: The submersible bridges over the Shimanto River are best in the early morning mist and at dusk. Cape Muroto is best just after sunrise. Cape Ashizuri is best on a clear day between winter and spring when the air is crisp. Hitsuzan Park is best during the magic hour around sunset. Ryugado Cave is indoors, so the weather does not matter.
• Opening hours / seasons: The last entry to Ryugado Cave is 17:00 from February 1 to the end of October and 16:30 from November 1 to the end of January. The sightseeing course takes about 40 minutes.
• Fees: The sightseeing course at Ryugado Cave costs 1,500 yen for adults (high school students and older), 800 yen for junior high school students and 600 yen for elementary school students. You may not enter the cave after drinking alcohol. There is no charge to view the submersible bridges of the Shimanto River, Cape Muroto, Cape Ashizuri or Hitsuzan Park.
• Access: Ryugado Cave is about 20 minutes by car from the Nankoku IC on the Kochi Expressway. Sada Chinkabashi Bridge is along Prefectural Route 340. Cape Muroto is about 2 hours by car from Kochi City via National Route 55. Cape Ashizuri is about 2 hours 30 minutes by car from Kochi City. Hitsuzan Park is about 10 minutes by car from central Kochi City (the nearest stop is Umenotsuji on the Tosaden Kotsu Sanbashi Line).
• Parking: Sada Chinkabashi Bridge has a free parking lot along Prefectural Route 340 (space for 6 buses; limited to a maximum of 2 large buses during Golden Week and the Obon holidays / Shimanto City Tourism Association). Hitsuzan Park and Ryugado Cave also have parking.
• Photography rules: The submersible bridges are everyday roads that local people drive across as part of daily life. Please do not stop or park on the bridges or their approach roads, and do not shoot photos or set up tripods in ways that obstruct traffic. The fields and houses at the foot of the bridges are private property. Do not enter without permission. Ryugado Cave is a National Historic Site and Natural Monument, where touching the stalactites and straying from the course are prohibited. Follow the on-site signs and the staff's instructions as to whether photography is allowed.
• Safety advice: The submersible bridges have no railings or fall-prevention barriers. They are built to be submerged when the river rises, so never set foot on them in rain or high water. The rocks along the Ranshou promenade at Cape Muroto (about 2.6 km) can be swept by high waves, so stay away in rough weather. Cape Ashizuri consists of sheer cliffs. Do not go beyond the fences. The path up to the observation deck in Hitsuzan Park is a steep continuous slope, and at night it is dark with only limited street lighting. Bring a light for your footing and take care not to go alone.
