Amakusa Dolphin Watching and Christian Heritage Course

🏯 Kumamoto|July 1, 2026

Amakusa Dolphin Watching and Christian Heritage Course

Wild dolphins live in the seas of Amakusa year-round. Board a boat and there is a high chance of meeting them, which is one of Amakusa's great charms. This land is also a place where the history of the hidden Christians lives on. The thrill of the sea and a quietly inherited story of faith: this course tours both faces in a single day.

Course Route

9:30 Start dolphin watching Head out to the Amakusa sea first. Board a cruise boat and set off in search of wild bottlenose dolphins. Seeing a pod swim up close is a special thrill.

11:00 Return to port and rest After disembarking, take a break around the harbor. Gaze at the Amakusa sea and savor the afterglow.

12:00 Seafood lunch Amakusa is a treasure trove of the sea. Fill up on sushi or a seafood rice bowl made with fresh fish.

13:30 On to the Sakitsu village Head to the Sakitsu village, listed as a World Heritage site. Facing the sea, the quiet Sakitsu Church conveys this area's history of faith to the present.

15:00 Tour the heritage sites and finish Stop by nearby Christian-related sites and museums, reflect on the path Amakusa has walked, and end the day.

Highlights

Meeting wild dolphins is the biggest highlight of all. With luck, you can watch them swim right beside the boat. The Sakitsu village charms with its distinctive scenery where fishing-village life and faith intertwine, and it forms part of the World Heritage listing. Experiencing the contrast of sea and history is the essence of this course.

Access and Tips

Amakusa covers a wide area with islands linked by bridges, so traveling by car is convenient. Booking dolphin watching in advance is the sure approach. Since you board a boat, those prone to seasickness may want to bring motion-sickness medicine.

A Quick Tip

Sun and wind can be strong out on the water, so a hat and a light layer keep you comfortable. The Sakitsu village is also a quiet place of prayer, so please mind your manners while visiting.
