This is the classic walking route built around Kumamoto Castle, the symbol of the city center. While admiring the keep as its restoration moves forward, you can wander the old castle town at its foot and enjoy both the weight of history and the fun of local Kumamoto food at once. The walking distance is comfortable, making this a great half-day plan for first-time visitors.
Course Route
9:00 Start at Kumamoto Castle Begin at Kumamoto Castle in the clear morning air. Said to have been built by Kato Kiyomasa, the castle impresses with its towering stone walls and restored keep. Take your time to look around.
10:30 View the keep from Ninomaru Plaza From the wide Ninomaru Plaza you can photograph the keep from a perfect angle. Sitting on the lawn for a short rest is also a nice option.
11:00 Head to Sakura no Baba Josaien At the foot of the castle, Sakura no Baba Josaien recreates an Edo-period townscape. It is a great place to hunt for souvenirs and snack as you walk.
12:00 Lunch in the castle town At shops inside or around the complex, try Kumamoto specialties such as basashi horse sashimi and taipien noodle soup. Do sample the local flavors.
13:30 Stroll the castle town and finish Walk toward the Kamitori and Shimotori shopping arcades to soak up the town atmosphere and wrap up your stroll.
