[Important] About the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake

Because of the Kumamoto Earthquake of 28 July 2026, some tourist facilities and roads in Kumamoto Prefecture may be closed or impassable. Kumamoto Castle reopened on 13 August 2026, but the Kumamoto Castle Museum "Wakuwaku-za" remains temporarily closed and is scheduled to reopen in December 2026 (announced officially on 11 September 2026). Course Route

10:00 Start in the Kurokawa Onsen town Begin with a casual stroll through the hot spring town. Walking the charming riverside street lined with inns brings a nostalgic feeling. Stopping first at Kaze no Ya, the tourism inn cooperative in the center of town, to gather information makes it easier to plan your bath hopping.

11:00 Hop the famous open-air baths Kurokawa Onsen is known for bath hopping with a nyuto tegata bathing pass. The pass costs 1,500 yen for adults and 700 yen for children and is valid for six months from purchase. From about 25 member inns you can choose three open-air baths to enjoy, and one of the three may instead be used for food or souvenirs. Try a few baths at inns, each with its own character.

12:30 Lunch in the town Between walks, pause for a meal made with local ingredients. Warming regional dishes such as dango-jiru dumpling soup are recommended. Using one of your pass tickets at a cafe or eatery is a clever way to enjoy it.

14:00 Drive the Minamioguni hills Get in the car and head into the rural scenery of Minamioguni. Enjoy a relaxed drive through the lush green landscape.

15:00 Stop at spring water spots and shops to finish Drop by the Oguni roadside station or local product shops, pick out souvenirs, and close out the day. Minamioguni is also known for its fine Oguni cedar timber and Jersey milk, so you can find products unique to the area.

On winter and early spring nights, the Yuakari event lights the town with bamboo lanterns for a dreamlike atmosphere. The gentle hill scenery of Minamioguni also soothes the heart.

Access and Tips

Kurokawa Onsen sits among the mountains, so access by car is convenient. Highway buses also run from the Fukuoka and Kumamoto directions. The town is small enough to walk, so parking at your inn or a designated lot and strolling is recommended. If you plan to hop between open-air baths, bringing your own towel is handy.

Practical Travel Notes

• Best season and time: Early summer greenery and autumn foliage make the hill scenery beautiful and bath hopping comfortable. On winter and early spring nights you can enjoy the dreamlike glow of Yuakari. For a day trip, starting your bath hopping in the still-quiet morning lets you go at an easy pace.
• Avoiding crowds: The foliage season, the New Year holidays, and long holidays make both the town and parking lots very busy. Popular open-air baths are relatively quiet in the morning or before evening.
• Time needed: Hopping three open-air baths with the pass takes about two to three hours including changing and walking between them. Adding a stroll, lunch, and the Minamioguni drive, allow half a day to a full day.
• Budget guide: With the 1,500 yen bathing pass plus lunch and souvenirs, figure roughly 3,000 to 5,000 yen per person for a day trip.
• Nearby real spots: Nabegataki Falls in Minamioguni, a popular waterfall you can view from behind like a curtain of water, is an easy drive from Kurokawa Onsen. Heading toward Aso, you can also add the grand panorama of Daikanbo.

A Quick Tip

A day trip is plenty enjoyable, but if possible stay overnight to savor the town's evening atmosphere too. Peak seasons get crowded, so planning ahead brings peace of mind. Some open-air baths have no washing area, so if you plan to hop several, arranging your order thoughtfully helps.
