Ikeyama Water Source: A Famous Spring Amid Ancient Giant Trees

๐Ÿฏ Kumamoto|July 9, 2026

Ikeyama Water Source

Springing up in the forest of Tajiri, Ubuyama Village, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture, Ikeyama Water Source is a beautiful spring chosen in 1985 for Japan's 100 Famous Waters by the Ministry of the Environment. Surrounded by giant trees over 200 years old, the sight of about thirty tons of clear water welling up per minute resembles a Japanese garden. The water stays around 13.5 degrees Celsius year-round, and shafts of morning and evening light through the trees create a mysterious atmosphere. A healing spring where legend tells that the gods used the water for a sacred first bath.

Highlights

- Highly transparent spring water chosen for Japan's 100 Famous Waters - A mysterious spring forest ringed by giant trees over 200 years old - A Japanese-garden-like landscape created by about thirty tons of water per minute - Clear water kept around 13.5 degrees Celsius through the year - A sacred waterside carrying the legend of a divine first bath

Seasonal Enjoyment

In summer, the cool spring water and tree shade make it a pleasant retreat from the heat, and from late June to early July fireflies dance fantastically in the night scene. Spring and autumn bring a beautiful harmony of fresh greenery or foliage with the water surface. Because the temperature is constant, even in midwinter you may catch a dreamlike scene of mist rising from the water.

Practical Travel Notes

It is a few minutes on foot along a path from the parking area to the source. Many come to draw water, and bringing your own container lets you carry the famous water home. The morning and evening hours when light filters through the trees are especially magical, so visiting with the direction of the light in mind rewards you with a beautiful water surface. Nearby teahouses offer flowing somen noodles made with the spring water and coffee brewed with it, good for a rest. Within a short drive in the same Ubuyama area are other springs such as Yamabuki Water Source, which pair well as a famous-water tour. The ground is often damp, so slip-resistant shoes are reassuring.

A Word of Advice

The hours when morning or evening light streams in are especially magical. During firefly season (late June to early July), visit at night too to experience the otherworldly beauty of the clear waterside. Bringing a container lets you take the famous water home as a souvenir.
