Kyoto City Classic One Day Sightseeing Course

If you are visiting Kyoto for the first time, you will want to cover the must see classics. This course is a classic plan that takes in the golden Kinkakuji, the World Heritage Nijo Castle, and the sights around Kyoto Station all in one day. By making good use of buses and the subway, you can move efficiently between sights scattered across the city. There is relatively little walking, so it suits travelers who are not confident in their stamina, as well as families. It is a day packed with the representative beauty of Kyoto.

Course Route

1. 9:00 Start at Kyoto Station　First buy the Subway and Bus One Day Pass (1,100 yen for adults). It gives unlimited rides on city buses, the subway and some private bus routes, a perfect fit for this classic route. Head to Kinkakuji in the northwest. 2. 9:40 Visit Kinkakuji　About 40 minutes by city bus from Kyoto Station, right at the Kinkakuji-michi stop. Admission is about 500 yen and the gate opens at 9. A World Heritage temple whose golden pavilion is beautifully mirrored in the pond, the view across Kyokochi pond is one of Kyoto signature scenes. Plan on 40 to 60 minutes. 3. 11:00 Move to and tour Nijo Castle　Take the bus back to the city center to Nijojo-mae. Entry is about 800 yen (around 1,300 yen including the Ninomaru Palace viewing), with entry from 8:45 to 16:00. The nightingale floors and magnificent wall paintings are the highlights. 4. 12:30 Lunch from Nijo Castle to the city center　Rest with Kyoto cuisine or obanzai home style dishes. 5. 14:00 Head toward Kyoto Station and visit Sanjusangendo　Transfer by subway and bus toward the Shichijo area. Admission is about 600 yen, and the hall lined with a thousand Kannon statues is an overwhelming and solemn space. 6. 15:30 Stroll around Kyoto Station　Visit the station building views and Higashi Honganji (free to enter), and choose souvenirs. 7. 16:30 Finish at Kyoto Station　Enjoy the dining and souvenir shops inside the station to end the course.

Access and Tips

• To Kinkakuji, take city bus route 205 and others from Kyoto Station for about 40 minutes, getting off right at Kinkakuji-michi.
• Because you use buses and the subway many times in a day, the Subway and Bus One Day Pass (1,100 yen for adults) is cheaper and convenient. The former Bus One Day Pass ended use at the end of March 2024, so this pass is now the standard choice.
• Tour Kinkakuji and Nijo Castle in the morning and save the busy Kyoto Station area for later to keep things flowing smoothly.
• Nijo Castle is right by Nijojo-mae Station on the Tozai subway line. Using the subway during hours when buses tend to jam speeds up your travel.
• Many sites close reception by early evening, and Nijo Castle stops entry at 16:00, so make good use of the morning.

Practical Travel Notes

• Rough total time　From 9 am to evening, about seven hours including travel and sightseeing. There is little walking and the day centers on rides.
• Best season and start time　Every season is enjoyable, but Kinkakuji is exceptional under winter snow and in fresh green or autumn colors. Heading to Kinkakuji first thing lets you take relaxed photos before the crowds.
• Avoiding crowds　Kinkakuji and Nijo Castle get busy around midday. Finishing Kinkakuji in the 9 oclock hour and Nijo Castle by late morning, then giving the afternoon to Sanjusangendo and Kyoto Station, helps you avoid the throngs.
• Budget sense (rough figures)　Kinkakuji 500 yen plus Nijo Castle 800 yen (1,300 with the Ninomaru Palace) plus Sanjusangendo 600 yen puts total admission around 1,900 to 2,400 yen, with the 1,100 yen day pass on top (all rough estimates within what could be confirmed).
• Rainy day or stamina friendly tweaks　In rain or if stamina is a worry, center on Nijo Castle and Sanjusangendo, which are enjoyed indoors, and keep Kinkakuji short. Traveling mainly by subway also makes you less affected by weather.

A Quick Tip

The classic sights are very popular, and Kinkakuji and Nijo Castle in particular get crowded around midday. Aiming for Kinkakuji first thing lets you take relaxed photos and start the day pleasantly. Buses can be caught in traffic at certain hours, so using the subway as well makes timing more predictable and keeps you on schedule.

What this course assumes A 9 a.m. start and about 7 hours in total. You travel mainly by city bus and subway, and the distances on foot are modest.

Opening hours and closing days of each facility

• Kinkakuji Temple (Rokuonji): 9:00-17:00, open all year round
• Nijo Castle (Former Imperial Villa Nijo Castle): 8:45-17:00 (entry reception until 16:00). Closed December 29-31. The Ninomaru Palace is closed to viewing on certain days, including every Tuesday in January, July, August and December
• Sanjusangendo: 8:30-17:00 from April 1 to November 15, and 9:00-16:00 from November 16 to March 31 (reception closes 30 minutes before in both cases). Open all year round

• Nijo Castle: 800 yen for admission, 1,300 yen including a viewing of the Ninomaru Palace, with the Honmaru Palace a further 1,000 yen

Access

Parking The Nijo Castle parking lot is open 8:40-17:10 with room for about 250 ordinary cars. The fee is 400 yen for the first 60 minutes, then 200 yen for each additional 30 minutes. Kinkakuji and Sanjusangendo also have parking for visitors, but the surrounding roads are prone to congestion, so public transport is the surer choice.

What needs to be reserved The Honmaru Palace at Nijo Castle requires an advance online ticket reservation (available from 30 days ahead). Same-day tickets are sold only if any remain.

• Showing a one-day subway and bus pass (1,100 yen for adults) reduces the Nijo Castle admission fee from 800 yen to 700 yen
• Photography is prohibited inside the palace buildings at Nijo Castle
• Nijo Castle stops accepting entry as early as 16:00, so make good use of the morning
