Drive a little west from the heart of Kameoka and a quiet valley reveals Yunohana Onsen. This old bathing area carries a legend that wounded warriors of the warring states era soothed their sword cuts here, and its closeness to central Kyoto adds to its appeal. Spring brings fresh greenery across the hills, while autumn dyes the mountains in red for a treat after your bath. In winter, the deep chill of the Kyoto region makes the radium water feel especially warming to the core. In winter, savoring dishes made with local ingredients such as wild boar hotpot at the inns is one of the pleasures. Summer offers a pleasant breeze through the shade of the trees, so every season shows a different face.

Practical Travel Notes

• Facilities that welcome day bathers and inns open only to overnight guests are mixed together. If a drop in bath is your aim, calling ahead to confirm the hours is the surest way.
• Kameoka is also the starting point for the Hozugawa river cruise and the Sagano scenic railway, so it is easy to plan a day pairing a cruise or drive with a stop at the spring.
• Staying overnight for local flavors such as winter wild boar hotpot and river fish is also recommended.
• There is a hot spring stand, a unique feature that lets you take spring water home with a special coin.
• At about an hour by car from central Kyoto, it is close and easy to visit even on a day trip.

A Quick Tip

Yunohana Onsen is a quiet village of a few inns. Day visits are fine, but staying overnight to enjoy wild boar hotpot and river fish is a real pleasure. Check the day bathing hours in advance to be safe. Combined with the Hozugawa river cruise or the scenic railway, you can make the most of a day unique to Kameoka.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Day-use bathing (with a meal): Sumiya Kihoan (Yunohana Onsen, Hiedano-cho, Kameoka City / tel 0771-22-7722, reception 9:00-22:00) / lunch plan 11:30-14:30, from 7,150 yen per person (tax included), or from 8,950 yen (tax included) with Kameoka beef steak / dinner plan 17:00-21:00. Both are sets of a meal and bathing, and you may bathe as many times as you like within the allotted time. Towels and bath towels are provided
• Day-use bathing (bathing alone possible): Satoyama no Kyujitsu Kyoto Kemurikawa (1-1 Dorogafuchi, Hiramatsu, Honme-cho, Kameoka City / tel 0771-26-2345) / 1,000 yen for adults and 500 yen for children / weekdays 12:00-21:00; Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, the days before holidays and the Obon period 12:00-15:00 and 17:30-21:00
• Shuttle service: Sumiya Kihoan runs a shuttle bus from JR Kameoka Station and Torokko Kameoka Station (advance reservation required). At midday it leaves JR Kameoka Station at 11:30 and Torokko Kameoka Station at 11:35, and the return service runs between 14:00 and 14:30. For the dinner plan it leaves JR Kameoka Station at 16:55 and 17:55
• Access: about 15 minutes by car from Kameoka Station on the JR Sagano Line / about 10 minutes by car from the Kameoka Interchange on the Kyoto Jukan Expressway
• Parking: Kemurikawa has 100 spaces for passenger cars
• Things that require a reservation: the day-use plans, the shuttle bus and the private baths
• Bathing etiquette: the day-use plans at the inn use the same baths as the overnight guests. Guest rooms cannot be used
