Welling up in Kumihama in Kyotango, Yumotokan is a spring famed for a giant open air bath called one of the finest in northern Kinki. The rugged open air pool of bare rock boasts room for many bathers at once. With free flowing source water of about 600 liters a minute and two kinds of source springs to enjoy, its appeal is considerable. As a day spa open year round, it is easy to drop into.

Enjoying the Seasons

In winter the flavors of the Sea of Japan, led by snow crab caught in nearby waters, reach their peak, drawing crowds who enjoy them with the baths. In summer, pairing with marine leisure on Kumihama Bay or the nearby Shotenkyo beach is recommended. In the spacious open air bath you can give yourself over to the free flowing water while gazing at the seasonal sky. A waterfall spilling from the rocks and the surrounding greenery let you feel the turning of the seasons.

Access and Basic Information

  • A few minutes by car from Kumihama Station on the Kyoto Tango Railway
  • About two and a half to three hours by car from central Kyoto or Osaka
  • Free flowing water from two sources of the calcium sodium chloride sulfate type
  • Open from around 9 in the morning until about 9 at night, year round
  • Day bathing is roughly 600 yen for adults and 200 yen for children
  • Free parking for about 100 cars, with room for large buses

Practical Travel Notes

  • To fully enjoy the famous giant open air bath, allow about an hour for a relaxed soak. The indoor bath also has a jacuzzi and a sauna.
  • Winter crab meals are very popular, so book lodging and dining early. For a day visit, a relatively quiet weekday daytime is a good bet.
  • With convenient car access and ample parking, it fits easily into a driving trip around the Tango peninsula.
  • Nearby sights include Kumihama Bay, the long sandbar of Shotenkyo and the Kabutoyama lookout, easy to combine with your visit.
