Doroyu Onsen (Yuzawa) | A Milky Secret Spring Beside Kawarage Jigoku

🍶 Akita|July 3, 2026

Doroyu Onsen

Deep in a high gorge of the Ou Mountains, Doroyu Onsen springs up quietly. A handful of inns huddle together, and the cloudy sulfur water still conveys the atmosphere of an old-fashioned healing retreat.

Highlights

The open-air baths brimming with milky water look dreamlike against green slopes or snowy scenery, and the rich water gently envelops the body. Just nearby spreads Kawarage Jigoku, where steam rises from pale rock. Counted among Japans great sacred grounds, its desolate scene is overwhelming.

Enjoying the Seasons

The mountain drive is pleasant amid fresh greenery and autumn color, while winter lends a special charm to baths wrapped in deep snow. The geothermally warmed Kawarage Otaki waterfall is a summer highlight.

Access and Basic Information

About 40 minutes by car from JR Yuzawa Station. Some road sections close in winter, so checking ahead is essential.

A Quick Tip

Sulfur water can tarnish metals, so mind your jewelry. Near the hell field, do not approach the vents too closely and stay on the trail.
