🌸 Miyagi|June 23, 2026

Okama Shrine

Tucked quietly into the town of Shiogama stands this small yet mysterious shrine. It is an outer subordinate shrine of the famous Shiogama Shrine, and its enshrined deity is Shiozuchi no Oji, said to have taught the craft of salt-making. In fact, the very place name Shiogama is said to derive from the sacred caldrons enshrined here.

The greatest highlight is the four sacred caldrons kept in the hall. There were once said to be seven, and they have been carefully guarded as sacred tools of salt-making. These caldrons are counted among Japans three wonders, and a curious legend holds that the color of their water changes before an upheaval occurs in the world.
