Mutsu Soja no Miya, an Ancient Shrine Guarding the Demon Gate of Tagajo
Mutsu Soja no Miya
In Tagajo, the center of the ancient northeast, stands this old shrine steeped in deep history. It is said to have been founded in the Engi era of the Heian period, between 901 and 922, by enshrining together the deities of a hundred shrines that stood in Mutsu Province. It is said that provincial governors posted to Tagajo first worshipped at this shrine before touring the shrines of each district, making it a special place where the gods of Mutsu gather.
It is also said to have served the role of guarding the demon-gate direction of Tagajo, and since ancient times it has gathered faith for its power to ward off great calamity. Today it is also known for blessings of safe childbirth and protection at sea.
