01 | Zao no Okama | A Mysterious Crater Lake of Emerald Green

Access: Accessible by car via the Zao Echo Line from either the Yamagata side or the Miyagi side.

Best shot: 5-6 a.m., just after sunrise. Spring and autumn mornings, when temperature differences arise, are prone to mist and recommended.

• Best seasons: The Okama of Zao from May to October, the azaleas of Mt. Tatsugane in May, and the golden leaves of the Hirose River in early to mid November.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Best season and time of day: Visit Okama on a clear morning while the Zao Echo Line is open (usually late April to early November). The azaleas on Mount Tatsugane bloom from mid-May to early June. The yellow autumn leaves along the banks of the Hirose River peak from early to mid-November. For the Gamo Tidal Flat, aim for the hours when low tide coincides with sunset (check the tide tables).
• Opening period / road access period: For 2026 the Zao Echo Line is scheduled to be open from 11:00 on April 24 until 17:00 on November 4, after which it closes for the winter (Zao Town official information); it is due to reopen at 11:00 on April 23, 2027. From around mid-October until the winter closure - which overlaps the autumn foliage season - and just after the spring reopening (late April to early May), the road is also closed overnight from 17:00 to 8:00 the next morning. The start date of the autumn overnight closure is announced only shortly beforehand, so check the road information published by Zao Town and Miyagi Prefecture.
• Fees: The Zao Highline, which leads to the car park beside Okama (Zao Sancho Rest House), costs 600 yen for an ordinary car.
• Access: Reach Okama at Zao by car via the Zao Echo Line and then the Zao Highline. For Matsushima, get off at Matsushima-Kaigan Station on the JR Senseki Line. The Gamo Tidal Flat is about 10 minutes by car from the Sendai-Ko IC on the Sendai-Tobu Road (Sendai City).
• Parking: Mount Tatsugane has space for 20 to 30 cars (Kesennuma City tourism information site). It gets crowded during the azalea season, so please avoid parking on the road.
• Photography rules: The Gamo Tidal Flat is a Special Protection Zone within the nationally designated Sendai Kaihin Wildlife Protection Area. Do not chase the wild birds or enter nesting areas or the tidal flat itself; shoot with a telephoto lens from the embankment or the paths. Much of the area around Mount Tatsugane is privately owned forest and farmland, so do not enter without permission. At the shrines and temples of Matsushima, follow the on-site signage regarding whether photography inside the halls is permitted.
• Safety notes: Mount Zao is an active volcano. Always check the volcanic alert level and any restrictions relating to volcanic gas in announcements from the Japan Meteorological Agency and Zao Town before you go. Okama is ringed by crater walls, and beyond the fences the slopes drop away steeply. At an altitude of about 1,500 meters it is chilly even in summer, so bring warm clothing. The Gamo Tidal Flat darkens rapidly after sunset and the footing is poor, so bring a light and avoid moving around alone at night.
