Nichinan Coast and Sun Messe Nichinan — Moai Statues and Pacific Ocean Views

The Nichinan Coast stretches south from Miyazaki city in a succession of dramatic sea caves, rock formations, pine forests, and sweeping Pacific views — one of Kyushu's finest coastal drives. Along this route, one unexpected landmark has become Miyazaki's most photographed: a hilltop park where seven moai statues, officially replicated from Easter Island's originals, gaze out over the Pacific toward their homeland.

Sun Messe Nichinan is the world's only facility authorized by Easter Island's governing council to reproduce and display full-scale moai statues. The seven statues — rebuilt in 1992 by the team that restored the originals on Easter Island — stand on a hilltop with an ocean panorama behind them, creating a genuinely surreal and memorable scene. The surrounding Sun Messe park includes a dinosaur-themed area, cattle ranch, and craft workshops. Beyond Sun Messe, the coastal drive rewards with geological formations: the Aoshima Island causeway and its bizarre 'devil's washboard' tidal platform; the dramatic Horikiri Pass viewpoint; and the Onioshido cave. Roadside stands sell Miyazaki mango, citrus, and local sweet potato products. The overall drive is best done by rental car or on a day-tour bus from Miyazaki.

Getting There & Tips

From Miyazaki Station, rental car or the Miyazaki Sun Messe Nichinan day-tour bus are the most practical options. The drive takes about 1 hour without stops. Sun Messe admission is approximately ¥1,000. Combined with Aoshima Shrine and Udo Shrine, this coastline makes an excellent full-day itinerary.

Best Time to Visit

The Nichinan Coast is beautiful year-round in Miyazaki's mild subtropical climate. Spring (April–May) and autumn (October–November) are most comfortable. Summer is hot but the coastal scenery is magnificent. Clear winter days offer exceptional visibility along the Pacific horizon.
