The Starry Sky of Takachiho

Takachiho Town, known as the stage of Japanese mythology, is a mountain hamlet surrounded by deep mountains. With the lights of houses sparse and almost no light pollution reaching the night sky, it is just like a planetarium the gods prepared for you.

Above all, where you can have a special experience is the area around Amano-Iwato Shrine. The starry sky you look up at in a sacred precinct where ancient myth lives is so beautiful that many visitors say they "lost their words." There are many days when even the delicate gradations of the Milky Way can be confirmed with the naked eye, and it gathers support from photography enthusiasts. A lookout spot with a good view near Takachiho Gorge is also a hidden gem, where the contrast of the gorge's darkness and the starry sky shows a mysterious world completely different from the daytime.

Best season / times: From late July to September after the rainy season ends, the rate of clear skies is high, a good chance to observe the Milky Way. It is best to begin observation after 9 p.m., once the moon has set. In winter from December to February, the air is clear and winter constellations such as Orion stand out beautifully.

Access: About 2 hours by car from central Miyazaki City. From Nobeoka Station it is about 1 hour 15 minutes by route bus (get off at the Takachiho Bus Center). A rental car is convenient for moving along dark night roads.

The Starry Sky of Ebino Plateau

At an elevation of about 1,200 meters, located almost in the center of Kyushu, Ebino Plateau is no exaggeration to call "a place made for viewing stars." Standing on this plateau protected by the Kirishima mountain range, you are first struck by the "vastness" of the sky. With few things to block the view, the grand panorama where stars twinkle nearly to the horizon has a special feeling found at no other spot.

In summer the Milky Way crosses the sky like a cloud, and if you are lucky, shooting stars flow one after another. The parking lot around the Ebino Eco Museum Center is easy to use even at night, making it a base where even first-timers can enjoy stargazing with peace of mind.

Best season / times: Summer in July to August is the best season for observing the Milky Way. From around 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. is when the most stars are visible, and the Milky Way passes almost directly overhead. In winter there is a possibility of snow and road-surface freezing, so be sure to check road conditions before visiting.

Access: About 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours by car from central Miyazaki City. It is also about 60 minutes by car from Kagoshima Airport, popular with travelers visiting from the Kagoshima side. By public transport, about 20 minutes by taxi from Ebino Station (Kitto Line).

Starry Skies from Central Miyazaki City

Central Miyazaki City has brightness, but driving 30 to 60 minutes lets you reach an astonishingly dark and clear sky. As a hidden gem near the city, the coastline around Aoshima is also worth checking. In just 20 to 30 minutes from the urban area, you can enjoy the sea's starry sky woven by the horizon and a sky full of stars. Its openness and beauty, different from the mountains, is the charm.

Enjoying the Seasons

Summer (late July to September) is the golden season with the highest rate of clear skies after the rainy season, when stars are most easily visible throughout the year. The Milky Way clearly emerges, overlapping with meteor showers such as the Perseids (mid-August).

Winter (December to February) is a season when the dry air removes dust and moisture from the atmosphere, and the outlines of the stars stand out sharply. With fewer visitors than summer, it is a hidden gem for quietly facing the stars. Orion and the Subaru (Pleiades star cluster) look especially beautiful.

In either season, aiming for the few days around the new moon minimizes the influence of moonlight, and you can clearly see even the Milky Way and faint nebulae.

Access and Basic Information

Renting a car with Miyazaki Airport as your base and heading for Takachiho or Ebino Plateau is the smoothest route. With an overnight plan where you need not worry about your return time, you can enjoy the starry sky to the fullest until late at night. Because mountain roads at night have almost no streetlights, a dedicated car navigation system may be more reliable than a map app. Setting up the route to your observation point before departure is reassuring.

Practical Travel Notes

• Warm clothing: Mountain areas and plateaus chill sharply at night, dropping into the low teens Celsius even in midsummer. A jacket you can throw on, such as a fleece or thin down, is essential.
• Lights: Because your footing is dark, bring a flashlight (a headlamp type is convenient). Using a red-colored light during observation helps your eyes adjust to the dark, so you can see more stars.
• Lunar phase check: Check a lunar-phase calendar before departure; aiming for around the new moon makes the stars stand out.
• Road conditions: Mountain roads in winter may freeze or have snow. Check road information in advance and do not push yourself.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Volcanic restrictions (most important): Miyazaki Prefectural Route 1 (the Kobayashi-Ebino Kogen-Makizono Line) near Mount Iwo is partly closed, and you cannot reach Ebino Kogen from the Kobayashi City side. Depending on volcanic gas concentrations, it may be provisionally passable on Saturdays and Sundays. Prefectural Route 30, the Ebino Kogen Oda Line, is passable, so you can travel from Ebino City through Ebino Kogen to Kirishima City.
• Trail restrictions: With Shinmoedake at eruption warning level 2 (raised on October 17, 2025), the "Hinamoridake trailhead to Ohatanoike to Shishikodake to Karakunidake" route up Karakunidake is closed. On the other routes, too, you cannot descend toward the Mount Iwo north trailhead. The Ikemeguri Nature Trail runs from Ebino Kogen as far as Fudoike, and you must turn back at Fudoike. Be sure to check the latest volcanic information before you set out.
• Ebino Eco Museum Center: Open 9:00-17:00, year-round with no days off. It is the visitor center for Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park and the Kirishima Geopark (at an elevation of about 1,200 m, tel. 0984-33-3002). Facilities within Ebino Kogen such as the Ebino Kogen Camp Village and Ashiyu no Eki Ebino Kogen are operating as usual.
• Ebino parking fees: 200 yen for two-wheeled vehicles, 500 yen for passenger cars, 1,000 yen for microbuses and 2,000 yen for large buses.
• Getting to Ebino Kogen: 1 hour 30 minutes by car from Miyazaki Airport and 1 hour by car from Kagoshima Airport (both using the expressway).
• If you visit Amano Iwato Shrine: The Juyosho and shrine office are open 8:30-17:00. Amano Yasukawara can only be reached on foot, has steps and no outdoor lighting, so the shrine officially advises visiting "during daylight hours." Some spots are slippery, so wear safe footwear. The grounds are not a park, so please refrain from making noise or bringing play equipment. Visits may be prohibited during heavy rain and similar conditions. It is about 2 hours 15 minutes by car from Miyazaki Airport.
• Route buses to Takachiho: Miyazaki Kotsu's Nobeoka-Takachiho Bus Center service has a discounted return ticket (3,140 yen for adults, valid for 7 days).
