Tip for travelers: The Teruha Suspension Bridge sways considerably, so those with a fear of heights should take care (even so, the sense of accomplishment and the scenery on the far side are exceptional). The hiking course has some places prone to becoming muddy, so trekking shoes or waterproof sneakers are ideal. There are bear sightings too, so bringing a bear bell or whistle gives peace of mind. Those concerned about insect bites should wear long sleeves and long pants and prepare insect repellent spray. The suspension bridge entrance fee was revised on 1 April 2026: 500 yen for high school students and above, 350 yen for elementary and middle school students. Mt. Sobo

"When it comes to Miyazaki's autumn foliage, it's Takachiho"—one step beyond that standard answer lies a quiet secret place that only travelers seeking true natural beauty reach. Mt. Sobo (1,756m elevation), spanning the three prefectures of Oita, Miyazaki, and Kumamoto, is one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains. Yet as a foliage destination it is not yet widely known—an existence "known only to those in the know," so to speak. That is precisely why a special foliage experience awaits here, one that can only be had in silence and that you absolutely cannot taste at crowded famous spots.

The best season is early to mid-October. Because of its high elevation, Mt. Sobo begins coloring earliest among Miyazaki's spots. The sight of the 360-degree panoramic view from near the summit, with beeches and rowans dyed in blazing red and orange, makes the word "spectacular" seem trite. Walking through the primeval forest spreading alongside the trail, a path carpeted with fallen leaves continues endlessly, and even the dry sound echoing with each step feels pleasant. Many climbers speak with surprise of being able to commune with the mountain at such close range.

What local climbers unanimously recommend is the "Foliage Corridor" of the Kitatani Trailhead route. • By public transport: About 40 minutes by taxi from Bungo-Taketa Station on the JR Hohi Main Line (to the Kitatani Trailhead). Route buses are extremely infrequent, so checking the timetable in advance is strongly recommended. Keeping a rental car in mind also gives peace of mind.
• Climbing time required: About 5-6 hours round trip from the Kitatani Trailhead to the summit (about 4 hours for the fit). Make a plan with plenty of margin.

Practical Information for the Autumn Foliage Season (Based on Official Announcements)

Since the start of 2026, fees, booking methods, and access conditions at Takachiho Gorge have changed significantly. This section summarises only what the Takachiho Town Tourism Association, Aya Town, the Miyazaki Prefecture Tourism Association (Miyazaki Kanko Navi), Ebino City, and Miyazaki Kotsu (bus company) had published as of September 2026.

Rowing Boats at Takachiho Gorge Require Advance Online Booking

Many guides still circulate describing the process as "queue up at the site on the day," but that is not how the official system works.

The scheduled safety inspection date in October 2026 is Wednesday, 14 October.

Part of the Gorge Trail Is Closed

The Takachiho Gorge walking trail has been partially closed for construction works since 22 June 2025, with a detour in place. The Tourism Association states that this partial closure was still ongoing as of August 2026.

The gorge was briefly subject to a full closure following the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake, but this was lifted at 8:00 on 31 July 2026. Entry to the walking trail itself is free of charge.

The Illumination Has Remained Cancelled

The Takachiho Gorge illumination was cancelled in December 2024 due to equipment failure, and no restoration date has been announced. Articles and photographs showing the illuminated gorge are still widely circulated, but there is no guarantee it will be available in autumn 2026. Please avoid planning your itinerary around seeing Takachiho Gorge at night.

Car Park Pricing Changed in April 2026

Car parks cannot be reserved, and there is no dedicated car park for boat users. The capacity of each car park has not been officially published.

A Shuttle Bus Runs on Busy Days

The Takachiho Town Tourism Association has published its 2026 shuttle bus schedule, which operates only on days when congestion is expected. The dates during the foliage season are as follows:

• Fare: 300 yen for junior high school students and above / 200 yen for primary school students / free for pre-school children (cash only)

Bus Fares from Kumamoto Have Been Revised

The express bus "Takachiho-go" (Nobeoka – Kumamoto, jointly operated by Miyazaki Kotsu and Kyushu Sanko Bus) had its fares revised on 1 August 2026; the current fares are 2,700 yen for Takachiho – Kumamoto and 4,000 yen for Nobeoka – Kumamoto. The service requires seat reservations and advance booking. The journey time from Nobeoka to Kumamoto Sakuramachi Bus Terminal is approximately 4 hours 5 minutes, with a 15-minute rest stop at Takachiho Bus Centre (with boarding and alighting). Guides still listing the pre-revision fares are in circulation, so please be careful.

Aya Suspension Bridge (Shoriha Otsuribashi) Also Changed Fees and Hours in April 2026

Peak foliage timing, illumination, parking, and closure days are not stated on Aya Town's official page.

If You Are Driving to Ebino Kogen, Check Prefecture Road Restrictions First

According to Ebino City (updated 3 September 2026), Miyazaki Prefectural Road No. 1 (Kobayashi-Ebino Kogen-Bokuen-sen) is closed to traffic on weekdays. On Saturdays and Sundays it is "provisionally open from 9:00 to 17:00" only when volcanic gas concentrations are below the threshold; it is closed at night, stopping and parking are prohibited, and motorcycles and bicycles may not use it. Whether the road will be open is announced every Thursday, meaning it is impossible to confirm in advance. Kagoshima Prefectural Road No. 1 is passable.

Many guides describe Ebino Kogen as accessible by car, but driving there on a weekday means the road may be closed.
