Karuizawa Resort One Day Course Around the Station

Karuizawa is a highland resort reachable by bullet train. In the cool, crisp air you can enjoy shopping, strolling, and visiting cafes. Even without a car you can spend a full day around the station, making this an easygoing day trip plan.

Course Route

10:00 Start at Karuizawa Station After arriving by bullet train, head first to the shopping mall connected to the station and enjoy the outlet stores. 11:30 Old Karuizawa Ginza From the station to Old Karuizawa is a few minutes by loop bus or local bus, or about a twenty minute walk. Snack on jam, bread, and soft serve along the retro shopping street, where the atmosphere of a summer retreat dating back to the Meiji era lingers. 13:00 Lunch at a cafe Take a break at a cafe or bakery surrounded by trees. The fresh highland air feels wonderful. 14:30 Stroll at Kumoba Pond Walk around this beautiful pond that mirrors the surrounding trees. It is about 1.5 kilometers, a twenty minute walk from the station, or about a three minute walk from the Roppontsuji Kumobaike bus stop. It changes with the seasons and is a popular photo spot. 16:00 Return to the station Head home on an evening bullet train, and do not forget to pick up some souvenirs.

Old Karuizawa Ginza is a historic shopping street long loved as a summer retreat. Kumoba Pond has a quiet waterside path that is especially lovely in the fresh green and autumn leaf seasons. The calm mood of the churches and villa district is another charm unique to Karuizawa.

Practical Travel Notes

• The station area is free to enjoy: Strolling Old Karuizawa Ginza or Kumoba Pond costs nothing to enter. Shopping, snacks, and cafe bills are the main expenses.
• Getting around and access: Karuizawa Station is served by the Hokuriku Shinkansen and is easy to reach from both Tokyo and Nagano. From the station to Old Karuizawa is a few minutes by loop bus or local bus (paid), or about twenty minutes on foot. Kumoba Pond is about 1.5 kilometers from the station, right by the Roppontsuji Kumobaike bus stop. A rental bicycle is an efficient way to cover the area.
• Time needed: Figure about an hour to stroll Old Karuizawa Ginza and twenty to thirty minutes to circle Kumoba Pond. Even with shopping, half a day to a full day is plenty.
• Best seasons and timing: The elevation is high and it stays cool even in summer, ideal for escaping the heat. Kumoba Pond is especially lovely in the fresh green and autumn leaf seasons, and early morning is uncrowded with a calm water surface.
• Clothing: The elevation is high and mornings and evenings are chilly, so bring a light layer even in summer. There is a fair bit of walking, so wear comfortable shoes.
• Budget: Including transport, lunch, snacks, and souvenirs, the station area alone can be enjoyed for roughly three to six thousand yen a day.

A Quick Tip

Old Karuizawa is a little way from the station, so a bus or rental bicycle makes the trip there easier. Popular shops get crowded, so it helps to have lunch at an off peak time.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Karuizawa Tourist Center (Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza): Open 9:00-17:00 (with extended hours during Golden Week and in summer), closed only at the end of the year. It is the town's tourist information office and entry is free of charge. The paid public toilets inside cost 100 yen per person per use (free for visitors with disabilities).
• Parking for Kumoba Pond: The official guidance from the town of Karuizawa notes that there is no car park right by the pond, and recommends getting around the town on foot, by bicycle or by bus. Drivers are directed to the car park on the west side of the north exit of Karuizawa Station (220 spaces for ordinary cars and similar vehicles) or the Yagasaki Park car park (65 spaces for ordinary cars and similar vehicles).
• Municipal car park charges: Both are open 24 hours. At the Yagasaki Park car park, under 2 hours is free of charge, 2-4 hours costs 400 yen, 4-8 hours 600 yen and 12-24 hours 1,000 yen. At the car park on the west side of the north exit of Karuizawa Station, under 1 hour costs 200 yen, 1-4 hours 400 yen, 4-8 hours 600 yen and 12-24 hours 1,000 yen (for vehicles leaving on or after 1 July 2025).
