Tsushima Nagisa no Yu: Day-Use Hot Spring Baths & Prices

Floating in the Genkai Sea between Kyushu and the continent, Tsushima is a border island. Access and Basic Information

Reach Tsushima by ferry or high speed boat from Hakata, or by air. Since the island is long from north to south, getting around is mainly by car. The Izuhara area gathers lodgings and eateries and makes a handy base. There are also bathing facilities that offer day use, useful for a rest between island excursions.

Practical Travel Notes

Bathing facilities such as Nagisa no Yu offer day use bathing, with fees roughly from a few hundred to around a thousand yen. Hours and closing days vary by facility and can change with the season, so confirming in advance is reassuring. Tsushima stretches about 80 kilometers north to south, and travel between the main spots takes time, so touring by rental car with room to spare is recommended. Local buses are limited in number. Ferries, fast boats, and flights are easily affected by weather, so leave plenty of slack in your schedule. Izuhara also has historic sites that convey the past, worth enjoying alongside a stroll.

A Quick Tip

Because Tsushima stretches a long way north to south, allow extra time for travel within the island. Boat and flight services can be affected by the weather, so plan a schedule with some room to spare. After your bath, be sure to try the seafood and local dishes unique to Tsushima.

• Spring quality: Weakly alkaline simple spring

• Opening hours: 10:00-21:00 (last reception 20:30)

• Bathing fee: 600 yen for adults, 450 yen for those aged 70 and over, 250 yen for elementary and junior high school students (revised in April 2017)
• Coupon tickets: A set of 11 tickets costs 5,000 yen for adults and 3,500 yen for those aged 70 and over. Good value if you are staying on the island for a while
• Open-air bath: There is one, although it is only open for limited periods
• Bath towels: The Tsushima City Hot Spring Facilities Ordinance sets a usage fee of 200 yen per towel
• Hot spring stand: You can take water from the source home with you, at a price of 100 yen per 100 liters (based on the ordinance)
• Rest room: There is a tatami-mat rest room where you can watch television or gaze at the scenery outside
• Access (on foot): About a 2-minute walk from Miuda Beach and about a 2-minute walk from Miuda Pension
• Access (by car): About 5 minutes from the Hitakatsu Port International Terminal and about 10 minutes from the Hitakatsu Port Domestic Terminal. It takes about 1 hour and 50 minutes from Tsushima Yamaneko Airport, so stopping by is not realistic on an itinerary based in the south of the island

Combining It with an Island Trip

Tsushima stretches roughly 80 km from north to south, so getting around by rental car is the norm. If you want to work Nagisa no Yu into your plans, the natural approach is to combine it with the day you use a sailing to or from Hitakatsu Port, or with a day touring the north of the island, including the Korea Observatory. If you also want to travel as far as Watazumi Shrine, which faces Aso Bay in the middle of the island, you will have more breathing room if you split your accommodation between two places rather than making the round trip to the northern tip on the same day.
