World's Oldest Wooden Buildings

Horyuji is a temple associated with Prince Shotoku, with most current buildings constructed around the 7th century as the world's oldest wooden building group. The entire complex was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 as the Buddhist Monuments in the Horyuji Area. The precinct divides into the Western Precinct and the Eastern Precinct and rewards a leisurely visit.

Sai-in Temple Complex

The five-story pagoda, about 32.55 meters tall, and the Golden Hall are Horyuji's symbols. Inside the pagoda are clay sculptures depicting Buddha's nirvana, and the Golden Hall enshrines the Shaka Triad (National Treasure), a masterpiece of Asuka Buddhist sculpture. The balanced layout enclosed by a corridor is known as the Horyuji-style temple arrangement.

Yumedono (Hall of Dreams)

Yumedono (National Treasure), the center of the To-in Complex, is an octagonal building honoring Prince Shotoku. During special opening periods in spring (around April 11 to mid-May) and autumn (around late October to late November), the long-hidden Guze Kannon is displayed, offering a rare encounter with its serene smile.

Kudara Kannon Statue

The Kudara Kannon enshrined in Horyuji's Daihozoin treasury is a 7th-century Buddhist statue characterized by its slender, graceful form, highly esteemed at home and abroad as a masterpiece of Japanese sculpture. The Daihozoin also holds other National Treasures such as the Tamamushi Shrine.

Practical Travel Notes

A combined ticket covering the Western Precinct, Daihozoin, and Eastern Precinct costs 2,000 yen for adults, high school, and university students, 1,700 yen for junior high students, and 1,000 yen for elementary students (revised in March 2025). From JR Horyuji Station it is about a 20-minute walk, or take a Nara Kotsu bus to the Horyuji-mae stop. By car it is about 5 minutes from the Horyuji interchange, with paid parking nearby. Allow one to two hours to view the halls and treasures. The precinct is large, so wear comfortable shoes, and note that photography is prohibited in many halls. Since fees and special opening dates can change, confirm the latest information before visiting.

Best Time and Tips

The spring and autumn special opening periods for the Guze Kannon are ideal targets. Fresh greenery and autumn foliage harmonize beautifully with the ancient architecture in comfortable weather. Combining a visit with nearby Ikaruga temples such as Chuguji deepens the sense of Asuka period Buddhist culture.
