Ryuchin Falls

In Uda City, Nara Prefecture, Ryuchin Falls sits quietly deep within the Ryuchin Valley. Beside the falls stands Ryuchin Shrine, which enshrines Takaokami no Kami, known as the dragon god, and which has been revered since ancient times as a sacred site for praying for rain. The falls themselves are a small mountain-stream cascade with a drop of about 4 meters, but the large basin, said to be where the dragon god dwells, is the sight to see. The surface glowing emerald green or cobalt blue with the weather and angle of light is breathtakingly beautiful, a little-known hidden power spot of Nara wrapped in a mystical air.

Highlights

- Glowing Blue Basin: A mystical basin that changes color with weather and angle, its clear blue-green surface beautiful enough to gaze at. - Ryuchin Shrine: A shrine of the dragon god beside the falls, where you pray for rain and the fulfillment of wishes in a solemn air. - Valley Walking Path: The valley path along the clear stream is a healing route wrapped in dappled light and the sound of water. - Untouched Nature: In a quiet setting not overly developed for tourism, you can fully feel the energy of nature.

Enjoying the Seasons

Early summer with fresh green offers a beautiful contrast between the valley greenery and the blue basin, ideal for a stroll seeking the cool. Even in summer the valley is cool, and many visit to escape the heat. Autumn colors the valley with foliage for a stunning contrast with the blue of the basin. After rain the water rises and the falls show a more powerful face. In winter the path can freeze, so take care.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Haibara-Nisaka, Uda City, Nara - Access: About 25 minutes by car from Haibara Station (Kintetsu), then about 15 minutes on foot through the valley from the parking lot - Hours: Daytime viewing is recommended - Admission: Free

A Quick Tip

As you walk a valley path from the parking lot to the falls, non-slip, comfortable shoes are essential. There are places to cross the stream, so do not push yourself after rain or when the water is high. As it is a sacred site, take your trash home and spend your time quietly. The mystical blue basin is photogenic, so daytime on a clear day is recommended for photos.
