The Miwa district of Sakurai City in Nara Prefecture is regarded as the birthplace of somen noodles. According to tradition passed down for more than 1,200 years, a deity of Omiwa Shrine (Omiwa Jinja) is said to have cultivated wheat and made noodles to help people suffering from famine and plague. The clear spring water flowing from Mt. Miwa, together with the cold, dry winters of the Nara Basin, creates ideal conditions for producing thin, supple, flavourful Miwa somen.

Hand-Stretching and the Art of Winter Making

Miwa somen is made by hand rather than by machine. Craftsmen coat the wheat dough with vegetable oil, then twist and gradually stretch it thinner and thinner. Somen made during the coldest months from December to February, known as kansei or winter making, is matured slowly through low-temperature drying and is considered the highest grade, combining fineness, firmness and a smooth texture. The sight of pure white noodles hung to dry like reed screens in the cold wind is a signature winter scene of Miwa.

How to Enjoy Somen

Chilled somen served in cold water is the summer standard, but Miwa is also known for nyumen, somen served in warm broth, which can be enjoyed year-round. Long-established somen restaurants line the approach and gate area of Omiwa Shrine, and savouring an authentic bowl alongside a shrine visit is the classic Miwa sightseeing route.

Omiwa Shrine and Mt. Miwa

Omiwa Shrine, said to be one of Japan's oldest shrines, has no main hall. Instead it venerates Mt. Miwa itself as its sacred body, preserving an ancient form of worship. The principal deity, Omononushi no Okami, is revered as a god of nation-building, medicine and sake brewing, and sake makers from across Japan come to pray here. There is no admission fee for visiting the shrine grounds.

• The nearest station is Miwa Station on the JR Manyo Mahoroba Line (Sakurai Line), about a 5-minute walk to the second torii gate.
• Somen restaurants along the approach get crowded around lunchtime, so arriving early or off-peak is more comfortable.
• Chilled somen is a summer favourite, while nyumen can be enjoyed all year; winter also offers the hung-drying scenery.
• Mt. Miwa is a sacred body, and climbing it is treated as an act of worship with specific rules; always follow the guidance given at Sai Shrine, where registration takes place.
• The area is a starting point for the Yamanobe-no-michi walking trail, so comfortable shoes are recommended.

Summer (June to August) is the classic season for chilled somen, but winter is special for warm nyumen and the noodle-drying scenery. The mild spring and autumn are ideal for walking the historic Yamanobe-no-michi trail. Combining a shrine visit, an authentic bowl of somen and a stroll among ancient sites in a single day is the essence of a Miwa outing.
