In Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture, as a subordinate shrine of Omiwa Shrine, one of the oldest shrines in Japan, Sai Shrine sits at the climbing gate to Mount Miwa, the sacred body of the shrine. Formally called Sai-niimasu-Omiwa-aramitama Shrine, it enshrines the rough spirit of Omononushi no Okami. Since ancient times it has been deeply revered as a deity of healing and bodily health, and the sacred water of the Kusuri-ido well welling beside the halls is famous as medicinal water said to work against all ills. The sacred water is drinkable, but if you are concerned, boil it first. Climbing Mount Miwa is a sacred act of ascending the mountain of the gods, so if you climb, check the etiquette at Sai Shrine. Touring it together with Omiwa Shrine and Kuehiko Shrine lets you make a full circuit of the sacred precinct at the foot of Mount Miwa and feel the power of one of the finest sacred areas in Nara.
