Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel β€” Spectacular Views of One of Japan's Three Great Gorges

Kiyotsu Gorge in Niigata's Tokamachi City is celebrated as one of Japan's three most beautiful gorges, carved over millennia by the Kiyotsu River through dramatic volcanic rock. The gorge's inner tunnel, opened to visitors in 2018 after a major artistic renovation by architect Hiroshi Hara, has transformed this natural wonder into an extraordinary fusion of landscape and contemporary art.

Highlights

The 750-meter tunnel bores through the gorge's rock face, punctuated by four dramatic viewing windows that frame the gorge like living paintings. Each window offers a different perspective: at one, you are confronted by a wall of raw stone; at another, the full length of the gorge opens before you, the turquoise river threading through sheer columnar rock walls. The installations within the tunnel β€” water mirrors, illuminated panels, and reflective floors β€” transform the journey into a meditative, gallery-like experience.

The final viewing platform, positioned at the gorge's narrowest and most dramatic point, allows visitors to gaze directly up at towering cliff faces draped in seasonal vegetation. In summer, the mist rising from the rapids below cools the air noticeably; in autumn, the gorge walls turn brilliant gold and crimson. The combination of geological grandeur and artistic intervention has made Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel one of the defining cultural experiences of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field.

A footbath near the tunnel entrance uses the local hot spring water, providing a perfect resting point after exploring the gorge path.

Getting There & Tips

From Echigo-Yuzawa Station, take a bus or taxi toward Tokamachi. The gorge is accessible by car via Route 117. Entry to the tunnel requires a fee. Non-slip footwear is recommended; the tunnel can be cool even in summer.

Best Time to Visit

Autumn (October to November) delivers the most dramatic foliage colors within the gorge. Summer offers cooler temperatures and vivid green contrasts. The tunnel is open year-round, though winter access may be limited after heavy snowfall.
