Itoigawa Jade and the Jade Coast

Itoigawa City in Niigata is a "home of jade," known since ancient times as a jade production area. In the Kotakigawa Jade Gorge in the upper reaches of the Hime River that flows through the city, natural jade is still found, and its beautiful green stone has been prized since ancient times. On the coast, jade washed out from the rivers is sometimes carried in by the waves and cast up on the shore, so with luck visitors can find jade with their own hands. This "jade gathering" makes it a highly unique and popular sightseeing spot.

Itoigawa is known as a globally valuable jade production area, with a history dating back to the Jomon period. Ancient people crafted Itoigawa jade into magatama beads and other items, using them as ornaments and ritual tools. For its geological value, the area is one of the first in Japan to be certified as a UNESCO Global Geopark, where visitors can observe jade and other precious rocks and strata. At the Fossa Magna Museum, you can enjoy learning about the origins and history of jade, and the workings of the Fossa Magna, the great fault dividing the Japanese archipelago into east and west, alongside real rock specimens.

Itoigawa is also where the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line, the western edge of the Fossa Magna, runs, making it a geologically very important place. The upstream Kotakigawa Jade Gorge is designated a National Natural Monument, where visitors can view the landscape of the jade source (collecting jade within the gorge is prohibited).

Seasonal Enjoyment

The best season for jade gathering is after stormy weather that casts up new stones by the waves, or from spring through autumn when the sea is relatively calm. In summer, many people stroll the beach alongside sea bathing. In winter, the Japan Sea is prone to rough conditions, and days with high waves are dangerous, so caution is essential. The day after stormy weather is more likely to have newly washed-up stones, but the water's edge can be unstable underfoot, so enjoy it with care for safety.

The beach is hard to walk on due to stones of all sizes, so non-slip shoes that can get wet are recommended. In sunny periods, bring a hat and drinks, and check the day's weather and sea conditions before going. Practical Information for Your Visit

• Collecting rules (prohibited areas): In the Kotakigawa jadeite locality (Kotakigawa Jade Gorge) and the Omigawa jadeite locality (Omigawa Jade Gorge), both National Natural Monuments, collecting is entirely prohibited, not only of jade but also of any other rocks, minerals, fossils, animals and plants. Collecting or damaging anything within a designated cultural property site is punishable under the Act on Protection of Cultural Properties.
• Collecting rules (rivers): Collecting stones (including jade) within river areas may require permission under Article 25 of the River Act and related provisions, except where the quantity collected is extremely small and the collecting is temporary. Please consult the Regional Development Division of the Niigata Prefecture Itoigawa Regional Promotion Bureau in advance.
• Where you can look for jade: The Itoigawa City Tourism Association lists Itoigawa Beach, Suzawa Beach, Oyashirazu Beach and Ichiburi Beach as the main places.
• Fossa Magna Museum opening hours: 9:00 to 16:30 (you can stay and look around until closing at 17:00).
• Admission: 700 yen for general visitors, 300 yen for elementary, junior high and high school students, and free of charge for preschool children. A combined ticket with the Chojagahara Archaeological Museum costs 800 yen for general visitors and 400 yen for elementary, junior high and high school students.
• Closed: Mondays and the day after a public holiday from December to February (open daily from March to November), and from 28 December to 4 January. There are also occasional temporary closures.
• Stone identification: Held on Saturdays and Sundays. It is only available to those holding an identification ticket distributed in advance by lottery, and on days when the curator is absent identification may not be possible even on a scheduled day.
• Access: About 10 minutes from Itoigawa Station on the Miyama Park / Museum local bus route, about 10 minutes by taxi, or about 30 minutes by bicycle.
• Facilities inside: There is no facility serving meals, and eating and drinking are not allowed in the exhibition rooms. Please refrain from bringing pets into the museum (assistance dogs for people with disabilities are welcome).
