Echigo Yuzawa One Day Model Course: Hot Springs and Snow Country Culture

Only about an hour from Tokyo by bullet train, Echigo Yuzawa is a hot spring town brimming with famous baths and the mood of snow country. Known as the setting of Yasunari Kawabata novel Snow Country, it charms with mountain scenery and a food culture of local sake and hegisoba noodles. Starting at the station, this relaxed course covers hot springs, a ropeway, and snow country culture in a day, all comfortably reached on foot and by bus.

Course Route

10:00 Start at Echigo Yuzawa Station On arrival by bullet train, first visit Ponshukan Echigo Yuzawa Station branch connected to the station. Receive a cup and five tasting coins at the reception, and taste up to five pours from about a hundred and thirty labels selected by the staff. The price for five coins was revised in July 2026, and about 1,000 yen including tax is the guide.

11:00 Ride the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway to the summit Rise swiftly to the peak on one of the world largest ropeways, about 1,300 meters long and carrying 166 people, linking the base to the summit in about seven minutes. The view of the Yuzawa townscape below and the mountains that change with each season is superb. A round trip ticket is around 3,500 yen for adults as a guide, and weekdays can be slightly cheaper under variable pricing.

12:30 Lunch and a stroll at the summit The summit area has an observation terrace and an alpine botanical garden, where you can relax in clear air. A meal with a view is a special treat. Service runs from about 8:40 into the late afternoon, with departures around the hour, twenty, and forty minutes as a guide.

14:00 Step into literature at the Yukigunikan Visit the Yuzawa town history and folklore museum called Yukigunikan, which conveys the world of Snow Country and life in this region. Kawabata handwritten calligraphy and related Japanese paintings are shown, and the second floor recreates the room of the heroine Komako. Admission is about 500 yen for adults and 250 yen for students as a guide. It opens 9:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:30 and closes on Wednesdays. It is about a seven minute walk from the station.

15:00 A day trip to a famous spring Yuzawa hot springs are known for waters gentle on the skin. Soak slowly at a facility open for day bathing and ease the fatigue of travel. Day bathing fees start from a few hundred yen depending on the facility as a guide.

16:30 A bite of hegisoba Hegisoba, bound with funori seaweed, is a local dish prized for its firmness and smooth finish. It pairs well with a closing drink.

17:30 Souvenir shopping at the station The station building has plenty of souvenir shops. Choose snow country gifts such as local sake, rice crackers, and sasadango before heading home.

Practical Information for Your Visit

What this course assumes Starting at 10:00, it takes roughly 7 to 8 hours. Beginning at Echigo-Yuzawa Station, you can get around on foot and by bus.

Opening hours and closing days of each site

• Ponshukan Echigo-Yuzawa Eki Store: From July 1 to September 30, 9:30-19:00 (last reception at the Kikizake Bansho sake tasting corner is 18:45). On extended days during the busy season, 9:00-19:30
• Yuzawa Kogen Panorama Park: The base station building is open 8:20-17:00, and the ropeway runs from 8:40 to 16:40 (last ascent 16:20, last descent 16:40). Both up and down services depart at 00, 20 and 40 minutes past each hour
• Yukigunikan (Yuzawa Town Museum of History and Folklore): 9:00-17:00 (last entry 16:30), closed on Wednesdays

Guide to fees

• Ponshukan Kikizake Bansho: 1,000 yen for the loan of a sake cup and five tasting coins
• Sakeburo Yu no Sawa: 950 yen (bathing tax included), 400 yen for children, 200 yen for towel rental
• Yuzawa Kogen Panorama Park: Same-day tickets at the counter cost 3,500 yen for adults (junior high school age and above), 3,000 yen for seniors (65 and over) and 1,700 yen for children (elementary school age and younger), free for children aged 3 and under. As well as the round trip on the ropeway, this includes use of the Yamabiko lift and the Alp no Sato garden

Access It is about an 8-minute walk from Echigo-Yuzawa Station to the base station of the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway. Ponshukan is connected directly to the station, and Yukigunikan is about a 7-minute walk from the station.

Parking There is a car park at the base station of Yuzawa Kogen. In winter there is snow, so public transport is the safer option.

What needs to be reserved No reservation is needed for either the Kikizake Bansho or the ropeway.

Points to note

• Those under 20 may not enter the Kikizake Bansho, and entry with children is also not permitted
• The ropeway may be suspended due to strong winds, lightning and similar conditions
• In 2026 the green season runs from April 25 to May 6 and from May 30 to November 15, with maintenance closures from April 13 to 24 and from May 7 to 29. The Alp no Sato alpine botanical garden is open from May 30 to early November
