Echigo-Yuzawa is a hot spring town known worldwide as the setting of "Snow Country," the work for which Kawabata Yasunari won the Nobel Prize. The Shimizu Tunnel that appears in the all-too-famous opening line, "The train came out of the long tunnel into the snow country," actually exists, and literary fans still visit in large numbers. The inn "Takahan," where Kawabata stayed for long periods to write, also survives, and the room of the time, the "Kasumi no Ma," is preserved. In autumn, Echigo-Yuzawa is at its finest, when the surrounding mountains turn to brocade-like reds and yellows and foliage and hot springs can be savored together. The colored mountains viewed from the open-air baths of hot spring inns are exceptional, and the autumn scenery spreading beyond the rising steam soothes the heart. Riding the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway straight up to a highland of about 1,000 meters, you can enjoy the grand panorama of foliage spreading below and highland walking paths colored by alpine plants.

Echigo-Yuzawa is a hot spring town to enjoy through all four seasons. For savoring foliage and hot springs together, late October to early November is best. Winter offers skiing unique to one of Japan's foremost heavy-snow regions and snow-viewing open-air baths. In the fresh-green early summer, the highland reached by ropeway is pleasant, and in summer it bustles with people seeking cool as a summer retreat. Because many pleasures are complete within facilities connected to the station, another strength of Echigo-Yuzawa is being less affected by weather. Choose your target season and fully savor hot springs, food, and nature.

Access and Basic Information

Echigo-Yuzawa Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen is the gateway. Its excellent access, as fast as about 70 minutes from Tokyo Station by Shinkansen, is one reason for its popularity. Highlights such as the hot spring street, day-use bathing facilities, and sake-tasting spots are gathered around the station, easy to tour on foot. It is also well placed for extending to the surrounding highlands and gorges and to the traditional craft village of Shiozawa. As it is very crowded with skiers in winter, arranging lodging and ski-lift tickets early is recommended.

Practical Travel Notes

• In-station "Ponshu-kan": at the "Ponshu-kan Kikizake Bansho" inside "CoCoLo Yuzawa," the commercial facility directly connected to Echigo-Yuzawa Station, you can taste a wide variety of local sake from within Niigata Prefecture. With a snow cellar, a sake bath, and sake-lees cuisine, you can fully enjoy Niigata as a sake region.
• Weather-resilient location: because the highlights are gathered around and inside the station, a charm of Echigo-Yuzawa is that it is easy to enjoy even on rainy or snowy days.
• Aim for late October to early November for foliage: to enjoy hot springs and foliage together, use this period as a guide. The highland views from the ropeway are also splendid.
• Book early for winter: in the ski season of this heavy-snow region, lodging is crowded. Arrange accommodation and lift tickets early.
• Taste sake in moderation: the tasting at Ponshu-kan is easy and fun, but take care not to drink too much. In particular, refrain from drinking if you will be driving.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Yuzawa Kogen Panorama Park (Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway): The 2026 summer season runs from Saturday April 25 to Wednesday May 6 and from Saturday May 30 to Sunday November 15. The base station building is open 8:20-17:00 and the ropeway runs 8:40-16:40 (last ride up 16:20, last ride down 16:40), with departures in both directions at 00, 20 and 40 minutes past the hour. It closes for maintenance from April 13 to 24 and from May 7 to 29, 2026 (TEL 025-784-3326)
• Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway fares (bought at the window on the day): 3,500 yen for adults (junior high school students and older) / 3,000 yen for seniors (65 and over) / 1,700 yen for children (elementary school age and younger). Free for children aged 3 and under, and one preschool child aged 4 to 6 goes free with each adult
• Naeba Dragondola: The 2026 autumn foliage season runs from Saturday October 10 to Sunday November 8. The Tashiro Ropeway, the Panorama Lift and the Rakuraku Lift finish for the season on Tuesday November 3 (a public holiday). Operating hours are 9:00-15:00 (last ride down 16:00), and 9:15-15:00 for the Panorama Lift (last ride down 15:45). The gondola is 5,481 m long and the one-way ride takes about 25 minutes
• Dragondola fares: 4,000 yen for adults / 2,300 yen for elementary school students / 1,000 yen for pets. Members (Seibu Prince Global Rewards) pay 3,700 yen for adults and 2,100 yen for elementary school students. Reservations are not accepted. Tickets are sold inside the day-trip centre "Schnee" and at the base station of the Tashiro Ropeway (8:45-15:00); they are not sold at the Dragondola base station. The Panorama Lift is charged separately at 1,700 yen return and 1,300 yen one way (cash only)
• Driving to the Dragondola: Private vehicles cannot drive up to the base station, so use the free shuttle bus
• Ponshukan Echigo-Yuzawa Station branch (the Kikizake Bansho sake-tasting corner): Inside CoCoLo Yuzawa. Pay 1,000 yen at reception and you receive the loan of a sake cup and 5 tasting coins (for up to 5 cups). Those under 20 and visitors accompanied by children may not enter. From July 1 to September 30 it is normally open 9:30-19:00 (last reception 18:45), extended to 9:00-19:30 on selected days (July 18 and 19, August 3 and 4, August 8 to 15, September 12 and 13, and September 20 to 23)
• The sake bath at Ponshukan: 950 yen for adults (junior high school students and older, including the 150 yen bathing tax), 400 yen for elementary school students and free for preschool children. • Yukiguni no Yado Takahan: Only overnight guests may view "Kasumi no Ma", the room where Kawabata Yasunari wrote "Snow Country".
