1. Sasagawa Nagare | The Miraculous Blue Born from the Transparency of the Sea of Japan

Spreading out in Murakami City, "Sasagawa Nagare" is a scenic spot where strange rocks carved out by rough waves and a blue sea so deep it seems to draw you in weave together a stunning landscape. Especially on sunny mornings, the contrast between the rocks and the sea stands out, allowing you to capture a shot that looks like an overseas resort.

📸 Photography Points

• Best season: May to September (high transparency makes the blue stand out)
• Best time: 10 a.m. to noon (light reflects off the sea surface)
• A wide-angle composition with the strange rocks placed in the foreground from a low angle is recommended

🚗 Access: Right outside Kuwagawa Station on the JR Uetsu Line; the Michi-no-Eki "Sasagawa Nagare" roadside station adjoins it. By car, use the free viewing car parks along National Route 345.

2. Mount Yahiko | A 360-Degree Panorama Overlooking the Sea of Japan and the Echigo Plain

The summit of Mount Yahiko (elevation 634 m), which is also the sacred body of Yahiko Shrine, the first shrine of Echigo, is a stunning observation deck where you can take in the Sea of Japan, Sado Island, and the Echigo Plain all at once. The gradation of the sky and sea dyed at dusk is breathtakingly beautiful.

🚗 Access: Use the Mount Yahiko Ropeway. It is about a 15-minute walk from Yahiko Station on the JR Yahiko Line to Yahiko Shrine, and a free shuttle bus runs from beside the worship hall to the ropeway base station in about 2 minutes.

3. Kiyotsukyo Gorge Tunnel | A Dreamlike Grand Gorge Reflected in a Water Mirror

Kiyotsukyo is one of "Japan's Three Great Gorges." At the Panorama Station at the deepest part of the tunnel, a thin layer of water reflects the gorge like a mirror, allowing you to take one-of-a-kind, dreamlike photos. Admission to the Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel is 1,200 yen for adults and 500 yen for elementary and junior high school students, and advance online booking is required in the busy season.

4. Teradomari Coast (Nagaoka City) | A Fiery Sunset Sinking into the Horizon

Known as a "famous sunset spot," Teradomari Coast is a dramatic scenic spot where the bright red sun sinks beyond the horizon while you gaze at Sado Island. It is a romantic location very popular with couples and women's trips.

🚗 Access: Take an Echigo Kotsu bus bound for Teradomari from JR Nagaoka Station and get off at "Teradomari" (check the journey time on the Echigo Kotsu timetable).

5. Mount Naeba | The Stunning View of the Sky Wetland "Naeba Summit Wetland"

The high-altitude wetland spreading across the summit of Mount Naeba (elevation 2,145 m) is like another world floating in the sky. Countless ponds called "chito" reflect the blue sky, allowing you to take extraordinary photos as if you were walking above the clouds.

🚗 Access: Climb from the Haraigawa trailhead, about 40 minutes from the Yuzawa IC on the Kan-Etsu Expressway, reached by a forest road from the Mitsumata area of the Kagura ski resort.

Sasagawa Nagare

• Overview: A stretch of scenic coastline running about 11 km along the Sea of Japan in Murakami City, designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument.
• Nearest station (important): Kuwagawa Station on the JR Uetsu Line. The roadside station "Sasagawa Nagare" adjoins Kuwagawa Station. There is no station called "Sasagawa Nagare".
• Parking: Use the roadside station and the viewing lay-bys along the coast. Free of charge.

Mount Yahiko

• Access: A free shuttle bus runs from beside the worship hall of Yahiko Shrine to the ropeway base station in about 2 minutes. From Yahiko Station on the JR Yahiko Line it is about a 15-minute walk to the shrine.

Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel

• Admission (important): 1,200 yen for adults (high school age and above) and 500 yen for children (elementary and junior high school). It is not free.
• Booking (important): During peak periods such as Golden Week, the summer holidays and the autumn foliage season (mid-October to early November), entry is by advance online reservation only, with four time slots: 8:30-10:30, 11:00-12:30, 13:00-14:30 and 15:00-16:30. On reservation-only days, tickets are not sold on site.
• Access: By car from Shiozawa-Ishiuchi IC on the Kan-etsu Expressway. From the nearest bus stop, Kiyotsukyo-iriguchi, it is about a 30-minute walk.

Mount Naeba

• Trailheads: The Haraigawa trailhead is on the Yuzawa Town side, reached by forest road from the Mitsumata area of the Kagura ski resort. Wada-goya is a mountain hut around the fifth station of the Haraigawa route, not a trailhead. The Kuroagesawa third-station trailhead is on the Tsunan Town side.
• Bears (important): Niigata Prefecture has a standing bear alert in force (updated 17 July 2026), and there have been two injuries to people in Minamiuonuma City this fiscal year. Carrying a bear bell or bear spray and avoiding hiking alone are essential precautions.
