Renge Onsen: Day-Use Hot Spring Baths & Prices (Niigata)

Renge Onsen is a hidden spring high in the mountains, at around fifteen hundred meters of altitude. Set in grand alpine country facing the Hakuba range, it has several open-air baths scattered across the slopes. Beloved as a base for climbing and highland hiking, it offers bathing above the clouds.

Several open-air baths fed by different sources dot the slope, letting you compare distinctive waters such as acidic and bicarbonate springs.

Enjoying the Seasons

From summer into autumn the alpine flowers and foliage are beautiful, and you can combine hiking with a round of the baths. Because of the deep snow it closes in winter, so note that the operating season is limited.

Access and Basic Information

Access is usually by car up a mountain road from the Itoigawa direction, and it operates only in season. Always check the opening period and road conditions before you go. The operating season generally runs from after the spring snowmelt until around October, shifting with snow conditions. A seasonal bus from Itoigawa Station is also available.

The base is the mountain lodge Renge Onsen Lodge, whose indoor bath and slope-side open-air baths can be used on a day trip. There are several open-air baths, and it is worth knowing that they are mixed-bathing. Day-use fees differ between the open-air baths only and a set including the indoor bath, and hours are generally limited to daytime. As a remote spring high in the mountains, the weather changes quickly, and reaching the open-air baths involves walking rough mountain paths in places. Bring sturdy shoes, warm clothing, and drinks, check the weather and bus and road conditions, and plan an unhurried itinerary.

The paths to the open-air baths can be rough underfoot, so wear sturdy shoes and bring warm clothing. As a spring above the clouds, mobile signal and facilities may be limited, so plan with extra time and equipment to be safe.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Spring quality: Each open-air bath has a different water (Ogon-no-yu = sulfur-containing magnesium bicarbonate spring, Senki-no-yu = simple sulfur spring (hydrogen sulfide type), Yakushi-yu = simple sulfur spring). The indoor bath "Soyu" is a simple spring (hypotonic, weakly acidic, high-temperature spring)
• Day-use bathing: Reception 9:30-17:00 (for both the indoor bath and the open-air baths). Outside these hours the baths are for overnight guests only
• Prices: Indoor bath + open-air baths 1,000 yen for adults, 500 yen for children / open-air baths only 500 yen for adults, 200 yen for children / indoor bath only 1,000 yen for adults, 500 yen for children
• Open season: From mid-March to around October 20. Closed before summer from May 6 to late June, and closed for winter from around October 20 to mid-March
• Access road: Open from late June to around October 20. In 2026 it opened on July 3
• Mixed bathing: The four open-air baths are mixed-gender with no changing rooms (Yakushi-yu is women-only when a sign is displayed)
• Amenities provided: The indoor bath has showers, rinse-in shampoo and body soap. Nothing is provided at the open-air baths, so look after your own towel and change of clothes
• Footing: You walk along a mountain trail to reach the open-air baths. It takes about 10 minutes from the lodge to Ogon-no-yu. Comfortable walking shoes are necessary
• Parking: Public parking for about 70 cars. It is a 3-minute walk to the lodge, and the bus stop is in the same place
• Access: 22 km from the Itoigawa IC on the Hokuriku Expressway. Car navigation systems cannot set the destination by address or telephone number, so set "Hiraiwa Station" as a waypoint and follow the road signs from there. There is free parking in front of Hiraiwa Station, and during the operating season you can transfer to the bus there
• Taxis: There are no taxis stationed at Hiraiwa, so you have to call one from Minami-Otari, Hakuba or Itoigawa. It takes about an hour from the time you call until it reaches the lodge
• Accommodation: One night with two meals costs 15,000 yen for adults, 8,000 yen for children and 7,000 yen for infants; 11,000 yen for adults without meals. A private room costs an additional 3,000 yen per room
• Campsite: About 600 m from the lodge (no vehicle access). The cleaning and management fee is 1,000 yen for adults and 500 yen for children. Bathing is charged separately
• Enquiries: The direct line to the lodge is a satellite phone, and it can be reached between 6:00 and 21:00. In winter, contact the office in the city of Itoigawa
