Oyu Onsen: Day-Use Hot Spring Baths & Prices (Niigata)

Oyu Onsen is a historic hot spring welling up by the Sanashi River in the hills of Uonuma. Known as a gateway to Okutadami and the Echigo Three Mountains, it charms visitors with a quiet setting amid rich valley nature. The food of the famous Uonuma rice country is a pleasure too. It has a long history, cherished since ancient times as a bath for healing stays.

Access and Basic Information

Reach it by bus or car from Koide Station on the JR Joetsu Line. It is also close to the Koide interchange on the Kanetsu Expressway. The water is described as a simple spring, valued as a soft, gentle bath enjoyed by a wide range of ages.

Practical Travel Notes

Some inns in the spa town accept day-trip bathing, letting you relax in baths overlooking the river. Whether day-use bathing is available and its fees and hours differ by inn, so confirming in advance is safest. Buses are the usual way from Koide Station, and services can be sparse at certain times, so it helps to check the timetable when planning. The mountain road toward Lake Okutadami is known for autumn foliage, drawing many visitors for drives and cruises in fall. Since winter snow is deep, be sure to check road conditions.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Spring quality: Simple spring (hypotonic, weakly alkaline spring / Gensen Yu no Yado Kairi) and alkaline simple spring (Hotel Yumoto). The water is colourless and gentle on the skin
• Source temperature: The three sources owned by Gensen Yu no Yado Kairi are 53.5°C, 48.5°C and 30.0°C
• How the water is used: Gensen Yu no Yado Kairi adjusts the bath temperature to 40.0-41.0°C without adding water or reheating, and also uses a circulating filtration system alongside this
• Day-use bathing (Hotel Yumoto): 15:00-18:00 (last admission 17:00), 1,200 yen for adults and 550 yen for children. Face towels are free and bath towels can be rented for 150 yen (including tax). People with tattoos may not bathe
• The baths at Hotel Yumoto: The large public baths "Oiwa Ishiburo" and "Shakujo no Yu", and the open-air baths "Senkyo" and "Tamayura"
• Parking at Hotel Yumoto: Free, 100 spaces (about 30 in the first lot, about 40 in the second and about 30 in the third, on a first-come, first-served basis). There is a covered motorcycle parking area
• Foot bath: There is a foot bath plaza in the centre of the hot spring town
• Inns: The Uonuma City Tourism Association lists seven inns at Oyu Onsen: Gensen Yu no Yado Kairi, Yumoto Shoya Izumiya Ryokan, Tomoya Hotel, Pension Duke, Ginsenso, Kodama Ryokan and Sumiyoshiya Ryokan
• Access (shared taxi): During the day the "Yunotani Area Shared Taxi" connects Koide Station and Oyu Onsen. The fare is 400 yen per ride (100 yen for junior high school students and younger and for holders of a disability certificate, free for preschool children). Advance booking is required: call the shared-ride reception centre (025-792-6222, 8:00-16:30) at least one hour before the departure time of each service. It runs every day except over the New Year period (December 31 to January 3), leaving Koide Station in the 10:30, 11:30 and 13:30 time slots and leaving the hot spring resort at 9:20, 10:10 and 12:40
• Access (bus and car): In the morning and evening you can use the Minami Echigo Kotsu bus on the Tochiomata Onsen line. By car, the nearest exit on the Kan-etsu Expressway is Uonuma IC (renamed from Koide IC on November 1, 2024). Hotel Yumoto is about 20 minutes from the Uonuma IC. From Urasa Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen it is about 30 minutes by car
• Pick-up service: Hotel Yumoto operates a pick-up service from the east exit of Urasa Station and from Koide Station by reservation (departing the stations at 13:20 and 15:20, and the hotel at 10:00)
• Road conditions in winter: National Route 352 towards Okutadami (Ginzandaira, from Ishidaki Bridge to the boat landing) and the Okutadami Silver Line (from Shimo-oritate to Hassaki) are closed in winter. For 2026 the closure has been announced from 9:00 on January 4, and it may come earlier depending on snowfall

• How long to allow: About one hour for a bath alone; half a day if you combine it with a stroll around the area
