Anatoyama Shrine

Set deep in the mountains of Kawakami in Takahashi, Okayama, Anatoyama Shrine is an ancient site listed even in the Engishiki Jinmyocho records of the Heian period. From a sacred pillar standing at the edge of a residential area, a narrow winding mountain road leads about one and a half kilometers to where the quiet shrine hall finally appears. Untouched by tourism and wrapped in deep greenery and silence, it truly lives up to its reputation as a hidden retreat.

The shrine name Anatoyama is said to come from the limestone cave called Goshinkutsu that sits beside the main hall. Since ancient times this cave has been revered as sacred, and a legend tells that a deity was enshrined here for four years.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Koyamaichi, Kawakami-cho, Takahashi, Okayama - By car: about sixty minutes from the Kayo Interchange on the Okayama Expressway, or about fifty minutes from the Kasaoka Interchange on the Sanyo Expressway. - Beyond the sacred pillar at the entrance, a narrow mountain road continues, so drive with care. - As this is a mountainous area, prepare for frozen or snowy roads in winter.

A Quick Tip

Public transport access is difficult, so visiting by car is recommended. The footing near the cave can be slippery, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The silence itself is the treasure here, so leave plenty of time to relax slowly and you will gain deeper peace.
