Kotobiki Falls

In Mimasaka, Okayama, Kotobiki Falls drops at the inner reaches of the grounds of Ameno Iwato Wake Shrine, an ancient site whose enshrined deity is said to date back two thousand years. With a drop of thirteen meters and a width of about five meters, it falls in two tiers, the upper called the male falls and the lower the female falls, and it has long been known as a fine cataract. The stream below the basin is called Kotobiki no Se, and its name is said to be the origin of the falls name.

The area where the shrine quiet and the sound of water overlap is wrapped in deep silence. Untouched by tourist bustle, it is a hidden spot perfect for settling the mind.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Takinomiya, Mimasaka, Okayama - A visit by car is the norm. From the entrance of Ameno Iwato Wake Shrine, proceed along a narrow single lane road to the parking lot. - From the parking lot it is about ten minutes on foot along a paved path to the falls. - Access from Yunogo Onsen is good, and many people visit along with the hot springs.

A Quick Tip

The road from the shrine entrance to the parking lot is narrow, so watch for oncoming cars and proceed slowly. The path to the falls is easy to walk, but it becomes slippery after rain, so mind your footing. Combined with nearby Yunogo Onsen, you can enjoy a day of settling the mind at the falls and easing the body in the hot springs.
